Title: St Kilda Adventure Playground

Elaine - July 14, 2004 08:10 AM (GMT)
Today we've been to St Kilda Adventure Playground. It was a fair drive, north of the city and took us just over an hour from Marion, but well worth it.

Several lovely adventure playground areas for bigger kids, plus one for smaller kids, a picnic area with bbq, toilets, ice cream van, a tram running through, and on the way in we passed a tram museum which I'm told is free, and a mangrove walk. Definitely a good destination for a weekend picnic with the family, especially when the weather is slightly warmer than it was today since it's also right on the beach!!!

Can vouch for this one too. Spent a fab day up there Sunday with the kids. And although it was very busy because it is so spread out you don't feel on top of every one. The only thing i will say is that don't expect too much from the beach as it certainly isn't the best I've seen.

But like Elaine says it's great for little ones right up to big uns! :D

Oh, and it's free!!!!!!!!!!! :thumbs up:

We were there on Sunday too!!

Wonderful place, never seen a playground like it. The swings were HUGE, must have been at least 20ft tall. Wonderful slides including a real scary one like a water slide that you go down on a sack to go faster. Underground slides that went down to a maze, a roundabout that you sat on (like a 'chairoplane ride'), a big and little sky lift thing and a huge fort climbing/slide thing. On the waters edge was a lifesize, pretend wooden pirate boat. OH and the reason the 'beach'(next to the boat) wasn't that good is because it's rather near the sewage works  There was rather alot of paper pulp, a nasty niff in the air and other suspicious looking stuff so we kept well away.

While I'm moaning the toilets were a bit dodgy too. But on the whole it's good points FAR outweighed the bad.

The smell, at st kilda is due to rotting sea grass, which is washed into the area by high tides, the sea grass, is killed by the discharge of fresh, treated water ,and storm water, from the Bolivar treatment works. This is slowy being reduced, a pipeline now runs up trough the Virginia, market garden area, and the cleaned reticulated, water is used for watering of vegetable, crops. The beach at st kilda is very tidal, when we were kids we would go CRABBING at low tide, catching "blue swimmer crabs" these are good eating........................mm

Still say what we saw was a bit suspicious  Definately paper,no vegetation and different coloured/sized brown deposits  .......Mind you I have only been here 5 weeks your probably right mm (I hope)

P.S Have put 2 photo's on Shutterfly of St Kilda Playground.

Just a warning to anyone going up to St Kilda ....

Took our boys up there and thought it was the best free adventure playground we have seen (and we,ve seen a few believe me !!)BUT our youngest seriously injured his ankle on the roundabout (had to have Xrays etc  ) there is a foot size gap at the bottom of the ride and his foot went thro under the actual roundabout , UNFORTUNATELY his body wsa still rotating on the ride but his foot was stuck :sign68: I really thought that his ankle had snapped . Luckily he still has very pliable bones and received a very bad sprain .

PLEASE be careful if your kids do go on the roundabout there!!

PS we will be going back as the kids LOVED it up to that point !

Thanks Delboy, excellent pictures, it helps to give the kids an idea of why we are planning to drag them half way round the world!
Biggest kid just said 'Cool!', so I think that means he's impressed!!

We were going to go there the Sunday before we returned but Russells nephew reckoned it wasn't suitable for younger children. What age do you think it is suitable from?

We went there yesterday, took a picnic & had a fab afternoon, the weather was fab. Kids loved it & the biting insects loved me :(

I recommend it to anyone who has kids :D

We went up there last month and the kids loved it .. it did stink though!

We went to the tram museum first and took the tram to the park, which the kids loved (in-laws were with us, don't normally go to tram museums).

Just a quick correction to Elaine's post - the tram museum isn't free, it is $10 adult and $7 child, this includes as many rides as yopu want.

I was a bit worried about the size of the equipment, but what worried me more were all the signs warning of snakes ... best to be safe, but they made me feel a bit uncomfortable. It is also a very barren place, I don't think I would want to be there on a reallly windy day, the sand would be everywhere.

Delboy - Twonk is one of my favourite words!!

How strange Delboy - we went yesterday and there wasn't a single fly! Wonder why you had so many in June? Have to admit I don't think I've seen more than a very lone one around since the summer.... curious....

Jet - June 12, 2006 02:43 AM (GMT)
G'day Diane,

Being a big kid myself ;) last summer I took the nieces and nephew down there for the day and the place was inundated with the pesky things, flies that is. I'm guessing Delboy was down there, from the looks of his pic's about the same time of year. Probably best to head down that way out of fly season from the sound of your experience, thanks for the advice.

Jet :)

Hello Diane.
Sorry for the confusion Dear.
The pictures were originally taken and posted in November 04 but due to broken links on photobucket i had to repost them.
I agree with you, probably not too may fly's down there in June unless the tides out :D

Hope you liked the pictures anyway.

Bonjour :)

Vince
