Title: Why are you leaving the uk?
leewilson - September 2, 2006 03:21 PM (GMT)
I want to post a question just asking why others are leaving the uk? I have my reasons. I would just be interested to know others.
Thanks Lee

Hi Lee
We are leaving to have more of a 'family' life and for some new challenges. Our daughter is 4 so this seems the perfect time to go so that we can have more places to go as a family.
We find that many things we are invited to here do not include children - this definitely does not seem to be the case in SA.
We also do not like the way the government is running this country at the moment and we are still young enough to start again.

 Where do you start........
The Weather has to be top of the list...just look out of the window today!
The Beaches and Ocean
The poor British attitude....which is just getting worse
So my children have the chance of a better future
And because we can......hopefully!

Hi
Already left and arrived early May. Adelaide has lived up to my expectations; wide open spaces, room to breathe, family friendly, and people in general happy and friendly.
My sons are able to play outside the majority of the time - not cooped up indoors because its too wet outside (we have had rain though!). They have much more opportunity to go to the beach, the many parks, indoor swimming pool without being trampled on by so many people. There is a massive great wooden park up at Port Noarlunga that has been built for the kids, is free, and is 3 mins drive away from the beach where you can watch surfers or just walk/run along picking up shells, kids running in and out of the edge of the water - the sort of thing you may be able to do a few times a year in the UK can be a regular occurence of a weekend here, without feeling chilled to the bone.
Have been twice Victor Harbour area to watch the whales (mums and babies) that are playing about in the fairly shallow waters of Basham Bay - an amazing sight - if you are a nature lover - you won't be disappointed living over here.
I could go on......I usually do......
Bev

That's pretty much why we are.
Also you only live once so you have to have these adventures. And Adelaide just had that right vibe when we looked into it.
We may well be wrong but nothing ventured and all that
weasy - September 2, 2006 10:55 PM (GMT)
Don't get me wrong I love a lot of things about some parts of the UK but.....
The space - my kids have no space in school, the roads are crowded, the shops are crowded - Britain is too crowded.
No National curriculum - schools treat kids the way I'd like them to be treated.
Because we have itchy feet and we can
My kids LOVE the beaches and (being pomms) they could paddle in the depths of winter and I could still worry about suncream etc!!!!!!!
The wildlife - I agree whale watching is just so magical. Also lovely was - fairy penguins on Granite Island, dolphins off Glenelg jetty and a few other places, cuddling koala and feeding kangaroos.
Oh - the weather - many grey days and TOOO much rain.
no national identity - too much PC stuff about minorities - faith schools not even teaching in English ( and believe me I have been the most PC liberal/right on person so far but things seem to be getting tilted too far......)
Not there yet so go back and forth between should we/shouldn't we but think - hey give it a really good go (3 years plus) and see how we feel then....
Louise

top replies i just feel the future here is too bleak the threat from within, the weather, my kids do not enjoy the uk anymore and do not go out much due to all the feral kids/ youths on our streets i find it quite sad that we had superbly brave people who fought for our futures and our futures have been darkened.
I know SA is going to have its share of probs but i look forward to hopefully contributing to a much more balanced society. Just got to now decide who to support in the ASHES lol :bouncy:

Primarily:
Because it was time to do something different, so we decided that if we were going to have a change, it might as well be a big one...
Secondly:
Didn't like the way the way the country was heading, getting fed up with the narrow-minded, zenophobic, little island England that we seemed to be turning into.
Tired of a village that was turning into a suburb.
Looking for room to live a bit.
And yes, the weather had something to do with it. Difficult to explain, it certainly wasn't for the heat, it's very cold here for quite a lot of the year, but it's never that energy-sapping miserable grey for more than a day or two at a time.

Lee.
We left the UK for very similar reasons to you.(I read some of your posts on the other thread on Britsabroad site). Adelaide has its problems like everywhere else but where we live in Fulham Gardens it is very cosmopolitan. We have Italians at the back and one side and Greeks the other but there is a real sense of integration and just getting along. Plus the location is superb. Recommend this area for anyone although as you would expect it is more expensive than other areas. I reckon Adelaide is extremely underated as a place to live.
Andy.
leewilson - September 4, 2006 05:44 PM (GMT)
My reasons are not too outrageous and I feel Adelaide is perfect i look forward to living in a multi cultural society that is multicultural for the correct reasons and with a bit of look people can live in peace.
I should be a politician!
kazza - September 4, 2006 08:17 PM (GMT)
We live near London and the terrorist threats feel like they're on our doorstep. I realise that terrorism is a global problem but major world cities seem to be prime targets. By coming to Adelaide, I would hope that we would all feel a little safer.
Oh, and the weather.

Too busy.
Crime.
I was loosing my temper more and more and two people had close escapes with their lives after crossing me!!!
You money on property goes further - we have no mortgage!!!!!!!
This was possible when we commenced our plans in 98/99 when the exchange rate was very generous. :-)
The weather - I love working on the land in Winter.
Sick of the general public's attitude in the UK - we worked in retail for years.
I might get told off for this but ......................
The UK migration policies ( or lack of them) - I feel qualified to comment as I am a migrant now.

Reasons for leaving the uk?
As Bubble said, the country is heading for the khazi, due mainly to successive governments "politically correct" policies
crime - a system where the perpetrator gets more support then the victim
asylum seekers - who needs them
abuse of the social security system - the "hand-out" mentality
"gangsta" culture - grafitti, violence
dirt and rubbish everywhere - no one cares anymore
old people can't walk down streets without fear of being mugged
troops being sent off to fight with inadequate kit
traffic congestion - costly public transport
no "3 r's" in the education system - it's even baa baa rainbow sheep now as black sheep is now racist
Judiciary - making absolutely stupid decisions about absolutely stupid cases
Successive Prime Ministers sucking up to America
I'd still like to see England win the World Cup but quite frankly I don't give a monkeys about the country any longer.

I,m not knocking them but it would be interesting to see if they are running away from something without looking what they are running to. those who have lived here a while have experience of both countries have valid posts. just a thought.

and the Eugene Mcgee and Paul Nemer cases show the justice system is completely unbiased

Couldn't agree more with you Perry ... we lived in Birmingham and I loved the cultural mix of friends we had. But there was quite a few people whose attitudes I found very hard to understand and deal with ... I just can't understand anyone's hatred (and in many cases it was) of another race .. I just find it totally incomprehensible.
It is an attitude which I haven't yet encountered here - not saying they don't exist, as I'm sure they do.
On subject - we left the UK because we had the opportunity to do so .... and life was getting too comfortable and boring! You only get one life - I believe you should go and life it, not wait for it to come to you, 'cos the chances are - it won't!

I'm sure someone once put on here 'I was born in GREAT Britain but I am emigrating from Britian' which sums it up for me.
I'm fed up of the non-elected liberal loonies dictating political correctness.
I'm fed up with people from ethnic minorities readily playing the race card when someone disagrees with their views
I'm fed up with the mass influx of east european labour - boy, wait till Rumania and Bulgaria come on line!! (this is based upon local experience where British workers (from minority groups as well) are being laid off work due to 'low orders on the books' but polish workers being recruited weeks later due to 'overflowing demand'
I'm fed up with people who are perfectly able to work sponging off the state
I'm fed up with the judiciary system that does not give maximum sentences to ALL criminals
I'm fed up with the Govt who choose to kick criminals out of prison early, rather than build more prisons
I'm fed up with the winter when the kids stay indoors from November to March.
I'm fed up with the Govt placating the liberals rather than being strong and telling where to sod of to.
I'm fed up with the traffic congestion
I'm fed up with the ease that 'asylum seekers' can enter the country - I know why they choose to enter the UK rather than Australia!
I'm fed up with people who said we should be more understanding of young hooligans who had a deprived upbringing - rubbish! I was brought up in the most deprived area of Wakefield District and I knew right from wrong
I'm fed up of the people who go on the Jeremey Kyle Show and ALL claim that their kid(s) have that Attention Deficency Disorder - or whetever its called. Give the kids a smacked bum - that'll teach em right from wrong.
I'm fed up of schools altering the curriculum so that kids cannot be competitive
I'm fed up of the 'if theres blame theres a claim culture'.
God I could go on and on ....
I realise that all these issues might greet me in Adelaide, but at least there'll be sunshine on my back!

When I married my husband he made me promise that we would go back to Adelaide after 5/6 years.
We have been in the UK for longer, due to our eldest boys exams but now is the time to go.
We kinda had these windows of oportunity to go i.e. before the next lot of gcses begin and we get trapped again.
I wish we had gone 2 years ago, but still ,in about another week I will be there with all the kidds.
Poor old John will still be working and selling the house in the Uk
We are hoping to be together by Christmas .

Total agreement with this. How can anyone read this and call someone a racist that too is a reason people are scared too express themselves through fear of being labelled. You can't express certain views without some shallow liberal disgustingly calling you a racist.
Law and order i mean our local tax officers who sit at the side of the road with their speed guns and have no desire to even consider arresting a criminal because that would just involve too much paperwork and then whats the point when you can't jail anyone anyway because the prisons are full. It is like a six year old has been asked to run the country, actually i must apologise to six year olds everywhere! :D
