Title: Schools
Description: Older kids - exams
lorluc - July 22, 2004 06:17 PM (GMT)
Hi,
Hoping to move to adelaide poss sometime in 2005. I have 4 kids - not greatly concerned about the younger 3, but a little concerned about my 14 yr old. She is due to start her GCSE's this september, so it is quite possible that we will move her half way through her GCSE's.
Any advice? Has anyone done this? Please could someone explain the education system for examinations in Australia?
Many thanks
Lorraine

http://www.schools.sa.gov.au/schl_home.aspMust admit I'm not too clear on exams here.... they do them in year 12, age 17/18, but beyond that I'm in the dark!

Hi
my son is 16.
The 16-18yr olds do a SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education) which enables them to achieve a TER (Tertiary Entrance Rank) for further education.
He has just finished his GCSE's and the results will be transferred into credits against taking the SACE. Hopefully he will only have to then complete 1 yr in order to apply for uni!
The children that do not want to stay at school, can leave before taking this 2 yr course.

my eldest is 16 Jan 2005 and is sitting his GCSE's in June
we hope to be in Adelaide by July 2005

Hi Helen Owain David
I have 2 boys currently 15 and 17. The older one does not know what to do when we get there. The way I understand it is they have 3 option at that age school, college etc, or join the workplace by an apprenticeship or some other job.
Bob and Ginnie sent me a good reply to a similar q I posted. He pointed out all 3 of these options and also said that being a teenager their mind is probably changes on a daily basis, also true.
My take on this is that we now wait until we arrive and see what other kids their age are doing. All the schools seem pretty relaxed about when you enrol them which is good cos it doesnt look like we'll be there in time for school starting.
Hope this helps a little.

Hi Helen here
Thanks, David is quite happy to leave it until we get there now.
Bob and Ginnie have some wonderful answers to every question I can think of.
I think David will just be happy to be there with nothing to do for a while.
Maybe your boys and David can meet up.
Where are you from and have you seen Sasha's question about us welsh meeting up on the 7-11-04 at Brewsters.
Check out the General Discussion
speak to you soon
