Title: Total Cost of Emigration/Relocation
Description: Any ideas?

Maillotjaune - September 19, 2006 08:05 PM (GMT)
For those who have done it already, I wonder if you could give us an idea of the total cost of your emigration and relocation to Adelaide?

The numbers seem to stack up v quickly, and I know there have been a number of recent posts about the cost of moving now compared to those lucky £10 poms, but it would be great to get some idea about actual totals. This would also help as I am beginning to get worried that I've missed something along the way!

Thanks.

Oooh.... how long is a piece of string?

There's the actual cost of your visa of course
Plus the flights, that's fairly obvious (depends on family size)

How many weeks' rent once you get here do you want to include as part of the cost of moving (how quickly do you expect to find work?) If you have say 4 weeks furnished accommodation first - that might be anything from $500 to $1000 per week. Then unfurnished for 2 more weeks at say $250 per week.

Then you'll be feeding yourselves for 6 weeks off your savings - say $250 per week for family of 4 (might manage less, but maybe best not to bank on it).

Plus the really insidious expense of all the little things that probably only cost $5 or $10 a time... you get a job so you buy a cheap iron for your shirts as your container hasn't arrived yet. You grab cheap crockery and cutlery in Cheap as Chips for $10 each as you've just moved into unfurnished - plus perhaps a few airbeds and some bedding to tide you over. And so on and so on.... It's amazing how this quickly adds up to several hundred $$$'s.

Kids? Then you'll have to pay school fees and buy uniforms, and for high schoolers, stationery. Allow $250 per year state primary fees, $450 per year state high school, private schools - sky's the limit. Uniforms vary considerably from $5 polo shirts of the right colour in Big W for primary, to school's own embroidered polo eg for Brighton High at $50 a shot :happy45:

Any more for any more.... All I can really say is however much you budget, it will cost you a LOT more.

Oh and just realised I haven't included car - purchase, rego, insurance... :lol2:

For us I reckon including visas, flights, shipping, setting up new rental (bond etc.) 2 cars (one banger and one 5 years old) .. initial bills, some new furniture and living expenses for the first few months without a job came to around £20,000!

These figures seem initially high but when I tallied up our move they are spot on - 20 grand for us.

We did take a lot of time off when we arrived so that figure could be a lot higher if you throw it into the equation.
