Title: Choosing Energy Suppliers
Description: Who's got any helpful info?
marco121068 - September 23, 2006 05:31 AM (GMT)
We're moving into our new rental in 3 weeks - and have the choice of who to provide us with Gas & Electricity.
Some of the energy websites we've looked at are totally :sign53: and don't actually tell you what their rates are. :sigh:
So far we've got pricing information from AGL and TRU Energy. :yeehah:
Anyone have any info from any other supplier such as :
Price / Kwh (Summer & Winter rate)
Standing Charge / day
Price / Mj
Standing Charge?
Any Exit fees they may charge (one of the ones we looked at charged exit fees for the first 3 years!) :sign68:

I'll keep my eye on this thread.
I too would like to compare suppliers.
There does not seem to be much in it.
Our electric bills are high!!!!!!!!!

Yes, electric seems to be very expensive, not looking foward to the bill in summer when using the air-con!!!
The two suppliers which seem to offer the most reasonable rates are Tru energy and Origin.

Wow - your gas seems cheap..... but electric seems expensive....
We are with TRU.
I think they do a dual fuel discount - which we tried to get on (twice). We also at the same time tried to go on to monthly direct debit - cos these 1/4 ly bills are crippling us -
BUT when we rang them, the foreign sounding gentleman in the customer service dept spent 25 minutes talking b4 he realised what we wanted to do and STILL didn't send us the relevant paperwork. So when we chased it up the foreign sounding lady took equally as long to understand and she ALSO didn't send the paperwork out!!
That aside - our last gas bill was $332, and the electric was $192.
We have gas ducted heating, gas hob and hotwater.
The electric we have in addition to the usual is an electric fan oven.
If u want facts and figures I have the new rate change info from TRU which came in on 1st Aug.
GAS (inc GST)
1/4 supply - $40.93
peak rates per 1/4 -
1st 4,500 MJ - 1.9704 c/MJ
balance of MJ - 1.2914 c/MJ
ELECTRIC inc GST
This varies whether it is summer, non-summer, peak or off-peak..... and I am not gonna type it all in.....BUT worst prices are for summer peak
First 300 kWh - 16.556 c/kWh
up to 1,000 kWh - 19.149 c/kWh
Balance kWh - 20.434 c/kWh
I hope this helps....
maybe someone can post similar rates from their suppliers - see if we can save some cash somewhere!

You can use this web tool to compare deals from the different energy providers in South Australia:
ESCOSA estimatorUse some of the figures provided by prvious posters to enter into the boxes, which should give you and idea of what works out best, Marco. It depends on what the setup will be at the house you'll be moving into. For instance, our house has only one thing that runs on gas and that's the spa. The hot water, cooling, cooking etc. is all on electric and that adds up. Also, the appliances you will have can make a huge difference. We have HUGE electrical bills and we found that the biggest culprits were the hot water (our system is old and can't be set to warm up the water during off peak times, like most of the newer ones can) and the cooker. We have an electric fan-assisted oven and a halogen hob. Our fridge is also very old and uses a lot of electricity. This is due to be replaced within the next month, but the cooking and hot water there's nothing we can do about (apart from having more barbies, hehe)! Also, our pool pump and filtration system are about 30 years old, and also very heavy on electricity.
Our last bills, just for comparison, were:
Electricity - $1278 - 4910 kWh used
Gas - $57.41 - 990 MJ used
We're with Origin as well - rates as in previous postings.
You should use less in theory than a family of four...
Good luck :D

Thanks guys. I'd seen the Estimator Website before - but without having anything to put into it was a bit pointless.
At least now with these numbers I've got a starting point to work from. :yeehah:

Hi Marco
When we moved in here I looked at tru, agl and origin. from what I
remember the gas rates are the same for all of them 1.97 per mega joule.
The electricity rates vary and so do supply, connection charges.
We picked origin as they were the cheapest monthly supply and connection, plus they didnt tie us in to a contract.......oh yes and I understood the acsent(sp) on the phone!
sarah

OK Folks.
Firstly - thanks for your replies.
I've spoken to AGL, ORIGIN and TRU Energy - and have compiled a spreadsheet.
PM me if you want me to email it - as I don't know how to attach it. :(
All the unit prices for both gas and electricity - ARE THE SAME! :sigh:
Based on not wanting a lock-in contract (TRU have a plan whereby the exit fee in the first year is $90, and $70 in the second year - for BOTH Electric AND Gas!) :sign68: They really are taking the :sign53: with that one. :P
My conclusion : AGL.
Exactly the same unit price (but less 5% dual fuel discount) and slightly lower standing charge than TRU (but the same as Origin) and $37.84 total set up costs.

Marco - have you managed to ascertain whether any or all of them use those nightmarish :sign53: call centres if you dare to ring up with a problem?
marco121068 - October 9, 2006 09:23 AM (GMT)
The only 'Indian' person I spoke to was from AGL - but very pleasant and understandable - but they might select the best ones for the sales line.
Annette - October 9, 2006 10:52 AM (GMT)
Marco, just two more to look at before you make your decision:
Momentum EnergySouth Australia ElectricityHehe, I called Optus customer care yesterday and had to speak to an Indian call centre girl. Bless her, she was so efficient and followed procedure exactly by the book. I couldn't understand her very well, but she was trying so hard, I had to smile ... but what made me really giggle was that every now and again, she said "no worries" in a really strong Indian accent - I wondered whether it was part of a script?
marco121068 - October 9, 2006 11:08 AM (GMT)
Aaaaaaaarrrrrrggggggghhhhh!
More phone calls to make.
Thanks Annette. How come I missed those?
Annette - October 9, 2006 11:11 AM (GMT)
 Tee hee, glad to be of service!
Jet - October 9, 2006 11:51 AM (GMT)
Yep have to agree with Annette, Marco.
Just checked on the website and I could be looking at almost a $200 per annum saving with Momentum on the leccie bill alone.
Certainly worth making a phone call tomorrow.
marco121068 - October 10, 2006 02:57 AM (GMT)
I've spoken to Momentum and South Australia Electricity - and my NEW conclusion is this.
Electricity : Momentum
Gas : AGL (Momentum only do Electric).
All the info is in the spreadsheet.
I'll base my assumptions on UK usage +15% (we had electric underfloor heating in conservatory so substituting for aircon and adding usage for electric oven here).
1000 kwh/quarter will cost us $40 less in usage (compared to AGL which is next cheapeast) as well as $5 less in charges, so the $100 exit fee should be recouped in 2 quarters or so.
Thanks Annette. Saved me some $$ :D
Annette - October 10, 2006 03:13 AM (GMT)
:thumbs up:
Thanks for the spreadsheet, Marco. Will come in useful when we switch - after our 12 months are up!
So, I'm assuming "application fee" and "connection fee" must be two different things, seeing as Momentum says on their website there is no "connection fee" for an existing electrivity supply?
marco121068 - October 10, 2006 03:27 AM (GMT)
I think the guy referred to it as a 'Meter Reading' charge - and apparently meters are only read on Tues, Weds and Thurs.
