Title: Medication

terry&rose - July 24, 2004 10:24 PM (GMT)
Hi

I was wondering if someone could tell me the rough costs of prescriptions in Oz as I take Thyroxine for an under active thyroid at the moment for which I presently pay no prescription costs for in the u.k., but i understand there are charges for medicines in Oz.

If any one else does take thyroxine any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Rosie :spin:

I take medication for diabetes and it costs approximately $23 per prescription. I think thats the average cost for most pharmacies. However, the last couple of times my husband has collected them for me and said that he was asked if we wanted the cheaper option??!!.... so i thinnk with some druga you can opt for the less well known brand of it for a small discount.

Hi Pickledpossum

Thanks for your reply. B)

How many months worth of medicine do you get at a time on your prescription? I normally get a repeat prescription every couple of months that's as much as the doctors will let me have.

So it looks like it would be best to get as much as possible on each prescription to keep the costs down that's if the doctors are willing to let you have more on one prescription at a time.

Also once we know when we are coming to Adelaide I will ask my doctor's if they could give me at least six months supply so i don't have to worry about it as soon as I arrive.

Sometime next year the wonderful government is putting up the cost of prescriptions by at least a third.

Your welcome Rosie

They do it slightly differently here. When you visit your GP, if you require constant meds like you and i do, they will give you a prescription which will say "5 repeats" on it. Each one is 1 months supply. You have to keep this safe at home and take it back to the pharmacy each time you run out. I have been thinking recently that i might ask next time if i can get more than 1 months supply at a time which saves a few trips.

Also, not sure if you are aware of the Medicare system. Try to go to a bulk billing doctors surgery. If you do this it will save you lots of hassle. A non bulk billing doctor will charge you the full price of a visit an dhten you have to go claim back your money yourself afterwards. This is a real pain in the backside if you need to go quite often, but at a bulk billing practice you just hand over your medicare card and pay nothing.
