Interesting question and I shall be curious to see the results. Maybe one for FAQ when it's done...

Hard to give a correct figure on this poll.
We bought 8 years ago and our house has nearly doubled in price.

There's no box for NOTHING!
I am a long term renter, no hope of ever buying a house here!

I'm not in the least embarrased to discuss how much I paid for my house 2 years ago - $255,000
It's now been valued at $400,000.
We have had a new kitchen and pool installed though, but still a good profit.

In 1991 I paid just under $30000 for a 710 sq metre block and the house (3 bed one bath, massive family room) was about $53000 to build. Must be worth about $300k by now - unfortunately it's no longer mine, ex hubby lives there!

$255,000 two years ago.
I dont think it's gone up as much as Blackhill's though :(
Lets not argure chaps and chapetts.
If you dont want to vote just click BACK top left of screen in most cases. ;)

Anyone else wanna take part in the poll??
Found the results very interesting!!
candiceno1 - October 10, 2006 10:50 AM (GMT)
we paid $370,000 for ours and not the least bit bothered we spent that much s it has been worth every penny. Been in it 1 year exactly and its been the most happy homliest home we have ever had.
I would like to know how much its worth now though as a house just round the corner without pool/spa went for 360

We paid $250k for our 3 bedroom house in Seaford 2 years ago. Don't think the prices have changed that much.

God wish we had over £600,000.00 to spend on a house!!! :sigh:

That would just about get you a 2 bed flat (80 M2 including balcony) at the new Port Adelaide development- it does of course include a boat berth :D . Its not built yet so thats the off plan price!! :o
If thats a bit out of reach, 400K would get the 1 bed (minus the boat berth) :o

It would have been lovely to have had money to bring over to Oz and buy a house outright! We have 25 years to go yet on a 100% mortgage. :)

I've noticed here that many people manage to pay their mortages off a lot earlier than the set term - often buying a second property for investment.
May you be one of those :D
Claire & Bruce - October 13, 2006 07:10 AM (GMT)
Yes, I've noticed that too. Aussies aspire to pay of their mortgages early whereas, for most people in the UK it is difficult because mortgages are generally much higher. Now we are in Oz we should be able to pay ours off early - would have just managed to pay it off before we retired in the UK
BTW, people borrow to invest in property, managed funds or shares as it is tax deductable. The mortgage on your own residence is not tax deductable - hence people seek to pay this off early if they can. Its called 'negative gearing' and the higher your tax bracket the more you benefit.
red 1 - October 13, 2006 07:24 AM (GMT)
If you pay your mortgage weekly its less interest than fortnightly and monthly !!!
That will get it payed off quicker!! ;)
wizzywozza - October 13, 2006 08:34 AM (GMT)
And there's many of us out here who cannot afford a mortgage of any sort, so definitely no investment properties for us!
That's why rentals are at a premium, a lot of Aussie families simply cannot afford to buy even at Adelaide prices.

I can't afford a mortgage either. :(
The goverment should reduce the price of beer at the next ozzy budget !! :P
And i can't afford my rent either...( all together now........)
wizzywozza - October 13, 2006 08:58 AM (GMT)
Me either, my rent is 50% of my take home pay.
ToonWilliams - October 13, 2006 01:19 PM (GMT)
I dont get it half the time, there are people up at the school (in the UK), who I know hubby works and wife doesnt, live in that big old 4 or 5 bed house, Kids in all the designer gear, and then the Brand New BMW X5 appears WITH a private plate!! Not to sure HOW they sleep at night!!
But we fall into the same bracket as the majority that have voted so this thread has been of interest as we had an illusion that "everyone" else had more cash to bring than us!! But obviously we are just plain old "average"!!??
