Just came back from my fourth trip to Darwin, and I have to say, I like the place more each time we go. It's just got so much going for it at the moment.
Jobs: The job market is kind of crazy up there. Staff are wanted everywhere and they will take anybody. Saturday paper was full of jobs "no experience necessary". It's the opposite to here. Locals say that if you can't get a job, then you don't want to work. From my point it would be great because if you didn't like the job, you could tell them to stick it and find another one.
Climate: Whilst I haven't experienced the middle of the wet season, there is something to be said for waking up every morning and having to decide which pair of shorts to put on. One of the things I have always found frustrating about Adelaide is the extremes of temperature. 2 degrees in winter and 44 degrees in summer. Darwin varies between 32 - 35, 365 days a year.
Lifestyle, leisure: Lots to do, even from a holiday perspective, we've been four times and still haven't done or seen everything. It's lovely to eat breakfast outside in the mornings. BBQ's on the beach, watching the sun go down are a regular occurence, but I live too far from the beach here, so that might be a bit of a novelty. Workers are very laid back, that can frustrate some, but that's me to a T.
Housing: Areas are looking good, but housing is still peaking up there, and we would be looking at minimum $450K to get into the market up there, which would put us into the red for more than I would be comfortable with at the moment (but my budget is built around single income, we could both work in Darwin).
There have been people that moved from Adelaide to Queensland, and said that "this is what they signed up for when they migrated". Well I think Darwin could offer that same lifestyle.
So if you are thinking of a holiday, bugger Queensland, head for Darwin.
I totally agree I lived and worked in Darwin for 4 months during the dry season a few years back and thought it was a great place.
