Title: The weather
Description: Now, we want the truth.....

Stompy Spod - July 26, 2004 07:40 PM (GMT)
OK, well I've been reading the post earlier on about the weather being 'flippin cold in Adelaide at the moment. I told Paul (me hubby) ages ago I was a tad worried that its a bit chilly in Adelaide (in comparison to the rest of Oz). Please can you guys that are there give us the truth, and nothing but etc.....How cold does it get and are we gonna think we're in England (please, no!!!). Please tell us that, on the whole the weather is fab....please....... :sigh:

Adelaide has extremes of weather.

Cold in the winter and VERY hot in the summer.

I don't live there (my son does).

No doubt someone else will give more details.
There is snow in the Adelaide hills sometimes.

The problem is not the cold (or the heat) but the fact that houses are not insulated properly and do not generally have central heating.
Many still have tin roofs so you can imagine....

It was COLD when I was there a few weeks ago.

Hi We were in Adelaide may June,
I thought the weather was great, I was able to sit outside in a tee shirt and have a coffee and could not understand why all the Aussies were telling me it was freezing?
Donna seemed to think it was cold but she has always been the type to hibernate from autumn to spring with a hot water bottle stuffed down her breeches.

I can only imagine that your blood thins after being out there for a while so it seems cold to long term stayers.

I could only compare it to a cold spring day at worst so expect to wear a jumper or light coat in winter I am sure that would suffice.

Cheers

Tom

You would not have been sat outside in a T shirt when I was there at the end of june. Unless you were an eskimo. :D

Hi Stompy Spod

It's end July now. I've just got dressed and am wearing a pair of tights, a pair of jeans, a long sleeved top and a jumper over that. I'll put my socks on in a minute. When I go out in an hour to drop the kids of at school I'll pop my coat on.

I think it is cold in Adelaide in the winter.

wizzywozza - July 26, 2004 10:25 PM (GMT)
It's 8 degrees at the moment - 7.55am Tuesday morning.

pickledpossum - July 26, 2004 11:03 PM (GMT)
Come on guys..it doesnt compare to a UK winter at all.

Yes it is cold, but nowhere near as bad as UK gets.

I certainly dont feel the need to put layers and layers of clothes on. Usually a juimper and light coat at the most. I think its a case of we are all different and some people feel the cold more than others. I do agree with old houses being very cold though. Theres nothing qorse than a drafty home.

Snow is extremely rare and only up in the hills i am told. Who was it posted recently the last time it snowed? Cant remember the year. Most places dont even get a frost, but i am told small pockets of places get the very odd touch of it here and there. My neighbour says he has never had frost where we are, but thats on the coast i guess, and hes lived here 30yrs!!

Hi Stompy,

We've been here since 5th June and it is cold, it does rain and it looks very grey at times, like england. I think that is the trouble I think it's about perception of what I thought it would be like. Having never been here before i niavely thought it would be warm so was very disappointed when we arrived and saw the reality. Everyone tells us we came at the worst time and it will be wonderful and I'm sure it will when the sun does shine it is superb. But if you head here don't throw away all your woolies and coats. We have bought an electric blanket. As someone else said there isn't heating or much insulation.

If you want a temperate climate Adelaides probably not the right place in my opinion.

Good luck Anita

juls - July 27, 2004 02:31 AM (GMT)
Adelaide is cool compared to say Perth or Brisbane in the winter but you look at the temps in summer and you'll say for sure Adelaide has a more meditterean climate although it was damn hot when we got over 45c. here last summer !

I'd hate to be in Canberra or Tazzie though their winters heaps colder than ours.

I'd love to put in the gas heating through the whole house so our bedrooms are warm too, but you do have to weigh up how much it costs to install and how often in a year it gets used. Maybe when we've been here another year and half I'll consider it until then I'll just wrap up and grin and bear it!

I still say the UK has moved on since your time there MM :D
I've always worked in C and I bet most of the others on here have too!

During the night it might get cold (It got down to 3C the other day), but unless you are planning on sunbathing at 6:30am you should be alright. I thought it was funny that we had our coldest daytime temperature for two years of 12C, I remember when it was -5C earlier on in the UK this year. I rarely go out during the daytime with a coat on, I can only recall one day I thought it felt pretty cold and that was due to the wind.

As for it being grey all the time, I've only seen one or two days since I've been here where there has been no sun. Adelaide averages around 2,500 hours of sunshine per year apparently...do your maths and you realise that the rain that we've had is unusual (plus it only really seems to rain at night).

Many of you seem to forget that we do get the occasional warm day here and there....watching the footy the other day, it must have got above 17C and I come home slightly burnt and this is supposed to be the coldest month! And although the weather temperature wise is better on average in Queensland (not too sure about Perth though, always seem to be roughly the same as Adelaide), we don't suffer from the storms that they get.

In comparison to the UK, the weather here is miles better...Don't expect it to be 30C every day with pure sunshine, I don't think places like that exist on this planet. I'm sure you can all put up with two months or so of winter to have good weather for the rest of the year

As we move into August you will, notice , less rain, and clouds , early mornings , will have ice,d up wind screens. Nights will be crystal clear, you will see the heavens, in all their glory, remember you are living on the edge of one of the biggest DESERTS [simpson] in the world . And that controls our Weather.............m

lynsteve - July 27, 2004 10:23 AM (GMT)
To think in about 6 months we will be in the high 30's, low 40's, about 25oc up from todays weather, plus high humidity, whoooooppppeeeeeeeeee can't wait.

pickledpossum - July 27, 2004 10:25 AM (GMT)
Paul..does this mean it must get a lot colder the further inland you go, as i am told we never get frost near my house? and we have lots of clear staarry nights even now.

BTW..all you newbies..when you get here make sure on your first night you go outside and look at the stars...you'll be amazed!!! sky is filled with them...not like UK where just the odd ones scattered here and there

HazelG - July 28, 2004 12:56 AM (GMT)
all I'll say is bring your electric blankets & definitely bring a stock of 13.5 TOG duvets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o
wish we had as the duvets are very expensive here - my mum has orders to bring some over ready for next winter!!

arlene - July 28, 2004 09:45 AM (GMT)
although i know its a tad cool (it is winter) have been out for a drive today and had to have the windows down because it got too warm

i like adelaide for its diversity of weather and when summer comes hopefully it will be lovely and hot and we will wish for weather like this

arlene

becca6e - July 28, 2004 11:35 AM (GMT)
Go to Designer Direct on Sir Don Bradman Drive for duvets (see the TV ads), they are cheap as chips and always have a sale on

Garf ;)

pickledpossum - July 28, 2004 11:38 AM (GMT)
we go there too Garf..got some very nice stuff ... good quality at much lower prices

Anniegran - July 28, 2004 12:14 PM (GMT)
I chatted to my sister-in-law on Sunday (she lives in Adelaide)and she said it's been the coldest winter in Adelaide for 13 years!

We were out there four years ago exactly. we arrived on the 23rd July 2000.
I didn't take any socks or tights 'cos there was no way I'd need them because I assumed that it wouldn't be cold enough! I was right, it just felt like an English springtime to me. I took a fleece to wear in the evenings and needed nothing more than that.

However, I think the weather must be changing because relatives have told me today that it is bl**** fleezing, has rained for two days solidly and blowing a gale!

Maybe this is just a bad year OR are the seasons changing? OR, is it true as Tom says, that maybe your bloods thins after being out there through an Adelaide summer?

:medium smiley:

tracey&wayne - July 28, 2004 12:47 PM (GMT)
One of things I love about the weather is that on a Monday morning when I go to work more often than not its a blue sky and the sun is shining.

Just makes me think, how lucky I am to be here.

This French company has stores all over Australia, not just Adelaide. What's your point? Or are you just having a cheap shot at Adelaide?

grayling - July 28, 2004 01:05 PM (GMT)
Don't be so touchy. Why should I take a 'cheap shot' at somewhere I may live and where my son does live.

Adelaide does get cold. What's the problem?

Damart sells thermal clothing especially underwear.

G

Anniegran - July 28, 2004 02:37 PM (GMT)
Sean,

As Grayling so correctly posted, Damart is generally thought of as supplying thermal undergarments especially (and also outerwear) for chilly mortals. I would not have expected to see a Damart shop in Australia.b ;)

http://www.damartonline.co.uk/damart.htm

Nevertheless, it seems that there is a call for these items....
