Title: Mawson Lakes: Property Press

Leyland2Adelaide - October 13, 2006 07:16 AM (GMT)
Hi,

Could you let me know the name(s) of the local paper that advertises property for sale and rent?

I've checked the internet but wondered if there was a specific paper in Adelaide.

Does anybody have any thoughts on Mawson Lakes and the area as a whole? From what I’ve seen the place looks quite nice, hopefully know more when we go for a drive round.

Last question what press in Australia is equivalent to either the Times or Telegraph.

Cheers

Only ever see the advertiser and the mail on sunday.
Mawson lakes looks great BUT all the Australians say it was all built on marsh land and wouldn't live there themselves. <_<
Looks ok to me though i do like a sea view and you won't get one from there !!

The Advertiser is the one to read for property news - Wednesday has some, but Saturday's paper is the big property supplement. The Australian is similar to the Times... (and also in the Rupert Murdoch stable). BTW - did you know that the Adelaide Advertiser was the paper where Rupert Murdoch cut his teeth?

Mawson Lakes is very new. It will suit people who like modern / urban style living. It's very neat and pristine with some "interesting" home designs. Also the site of the Mawson Lakes campus of the University of South Australia....

I've heard it said that the Aussies refer to it as Mozzie Lakes

You get them wherever you live. Just they are a bit bigger here.I can honestly say I used to live further North and still had a lot more bites than here IMO.....

A lot of the estate agents have little magazines in a rack out front with the latest properties they have for sale/rent. We found these contained more details than papers and were more likely to be up to date.

I suppose you could either do a weekly tour to pick them up or ask them to send you one each week.... plus good ol' t'internet. Domain.com.au is a favorite.

Not an Adelaide newspaper but we quite like the Sydney Morning Herald - www.smh.com.au
I believe Melbourne's The Age is quite good too.

The Advertiser is otherwise known as the crapvertiser - it is the quivalent of most UK local papers!!!! But it does tell you what is going on etc in SA.

I lived in Melbounre for 6 months and bought the Age everyday it is v good and can be bought in Adelaide, the SMH is OK too but the best paper in Aus IMO is The Age. Yes it is Victorian but still has the best world and national news out of all the Aus papers.

Hi,

I live in Mawson Lakes so thought I'd tell you what I think.

On the plus side:

It's a lovely suburb to live in. There isn't much traffic (providing you don't live right on Mawson Lakes Boulevard), the neighbours are really nice, we have one of the best state primary schools in SA and also a very good private high school (if you can afford it!!). There are lots of play areas for the kids, free BBQ's dotted about, stunning lakes (well they are more ponds, without the shopping trolleys LOL!). There is a nice community feel to the place and there are things going on like neoghbourhood get togethers, toy boat races and clubs etc. There is a really good shopping center with a doctors, dentist, places to eat, a hotel, woolworths and other stuff. As someone has mentioned there is also a campus here.

On the bad side:

I find the houses aren't that big unless you get a two storey one, but then you are looking at about $400+ per month rent or $400k to buy, the gardens aren't that much (we have 14 foot at the back). It's about 20 - 30 minutes to the coast. There are lots of Mozzies here and you daren't open the door after dark or your house is mobbed by them (I've not lived elsewhere so can't compare), we have had a brown snake in the back yard already but that's because we live near their habitiat (the marsh)

We are not going to be staying here, and are looking further south where you seem to get more house and garden for your money. But I do like living here and wouldn't put anyone off doing so. I think it all depends on what you are after, for me I want to live near the coast.

Hope that helps a bit
Wendy x

You can put the mozzies down to your council, salisbury council, they are not the best, they will eventually spray around that area.

Stevo.

I agree with what Wendy has said, it does look stunning, but you dont get much for your money! We looked at a couple of new houses on there and there was one we LOVED, the house was fantastic and was in a really nice location but the garden really let it down, I think there was just about enough room for the rabbit!! Def not two kids!!

Shame though seems to be the UK mentality there, pack em in and pack em in and pack em in some more!!

Annette - October 16, 2006 11:17 AM (GMT)
Most of the new housing developments will have a nice house with a strip of concrete around it, and maybe if you're lucky a postage stamp size patch of lawn. Unfortunately, the developers are in it to make as much money as they can, and that means packing 'em in as tightly as they can.. <_< same problem as in the UK, really. Most subdivided plots (in the more popular areas) will have this same setup as well.

I wouldn't easily live in one of the newer areas precisely because of this problem, but that's just me ... depends on what you like. Some people love the convenience of not having a garden to maintain...
