Title: Internet Access
Description: How much is broadband?
smiley - July 28, 2004 07:54 AM (GMT)
Just a quicky, having had broadband access for the last couple of years I feel I will need to get the same connection speed pretty much as soon as I get there. Can anyone tell me how much this is and is it as straight forward as here in the UK.
My house is going up for sale in 2 weeks (once I have given it a lick of paint) and others in the street are selling pretty quickly at the mo, so heres hoping.

Hi Paul
I know there's a few threads in faq with lots of providers to look up, but basically you have to watch out on any internet connection here as most limit the Mb's of download per month and can charge extortionately if you go over.
We've got broadband - though it took a while and several people telling us our street wasn't suitable before we overcame the hurdles. It is truly pot luck whether the house you live can be connected or not. I suspect you may be better off in newer suburbs with more recent telecomms wiring!
Ours is (finally!!!) broadband via www.tpg.com.au and we pay around $50 per month for unlimited access.
Hope this helps!

Hi Elaine
Does unlimited access mean you can download as much as you want?
I am hoping to carry on my business when we get over there which may mean lots of downloads...

Hi Bridie
Yes, that's what it means! You can also pay less but have a limit. Some charge extra if you go over the limit, others drop the speed of the connection.
You've probably said before, but what's your business? (I've got a head like a sieve....)

I wouldn't worry too much about the cost, more about when you'll get bloody connected. We've been waiting two months now, I know Howard said to me he waited a while but this is just ridiculous!!! Australia, probably the slowest country in the world (well, for getting connected to broadband anyway!)

Hi Elaine
I offer secretarial services from home (www.bridiestyping.co.uk)
I started last September and went officially self-employed this January. So far I have built up a nice varied client base, which I am hoping to take with me (although have said nothing to them at this stage) and keep building up in Oz. Although I expect I will get an office job to start with so I can get "out and about" and meet some new friends, but keep the business going in my "spare" time.!
I'm hoping to get some clients using digital dictation, which means they'll email me the sound file and I will then download it, type and and email it back. Since the sound files can be huge would really need unlimited downloads....

Hi Garf,
It has taken us about two months just to get our telephone line broadband enabled. Which just means we have a copper wire to ourselves.
Our Dial-up speed has increased from 29k - 42k, so hopefully we'll get a broadband kit at the weekend.
Hi Bridie,
What a fab business you have got there!!!
Do many people do that?
Good Luck with it anyway.
Tracey :thumbs up:

Try searching for your exact requirements here
http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/I've noticed most Aussie providers only seem to offer 512/128 whereas nearly all here use 512/256. Is this a limitation of the Aussie telephone system or is there another reason?

Hi Tracey
There are quite a few people doing this, both in UK and Oz, and I am hoping the business "travels" well.
As I say, I'm hoping to take some clients with me, not sure if they'll be up for it but the way I see it they can send their stuff over at the end of the UK day and have it back ready the next morning!
Fingers crossed anyway.. :sign03:

Thanks everyone. It doesn't sound to promising, and I guess it will have to be one of the criteria when looking to rent a place. :bouncy:
Not too worry, I could go back to dial up if really pusehed !!! :cool shake:

Hi Tracey
We had the copper wire malarkey too... they call it 'pair gain' (or a party line in uk terms) but it means that one copper wire services two lines - ie two houses. To run broadband they have to flick a switch somewhere at the exchange so your house has full use of a copper wire. So long as you're one of the early ones in your street to ask for it you might be lucky and get in there before they run out of wire to go round!
