I couldn't fault Cathay when we flew with them. The only thing I found annoying was the 6 hour wait for connectiing flights in HK airport. The food onboard was great, my daughter and I both stuck to the asian dishes and loved them all. It was annoying, but understandable, to see Chinese subtitles across the screen on all the films though. Planes were generally full, but the staff were just great.
At HK there was an inicident with an irate passenger about 6 rows in front of us and it was handled very well - personally I would have thrown him out on the runway.
HK airport was (at that time) just amazing, and it had not been open that long so all was fairly new. It might have changed now. I even managed to change British pounds into HK $ to purchase a card to use a pay phone in there!! Payphones are ones with video screen instructions, and quite easy to use once you have found the English instructions.
The souvenir shops are good, lots of other shops, loos were clean and usual variety. It was a little bit confusing finding our way from arrival level to departure level but no dramas there. The area where we waited for our connecting flights was spacious and plenty of seats and room to sprawl out and sleep or do whatever.
The landing approach over HK is amazing if you can look out of the window, still swear to this day we saw a UFO buzzing us as we took off for the onward flight to LHR.
I would definitely fly with them again.
