Title: 1st month - what an achivement

atkinsfamily - November 18, 2006 11:56 AM (GMT)
Hi to everyone here in SA and back at home.
We have been here for a month and we have achieved so much. I must admit the first week seems now to have disappeared in memories but it was quite traumatic. My OH went deaf after flying so it was left to me to sort all necessary paperwork (TFN, Medicare, rental). How we didnt end up getting devorced I dont know but hey we survivied and he can hear now.
We stayed at Greenways appartments in King William Rd North Adelaide, While they were not cheap they were extremly helpfull, and it was central to Adelaide (near the Oval). Easy to get the necessary paperwork done. I would highly recommend these people. Gary and his wife were brill.
We secured a rental in Aberfoyle Park within the first 10 days, its a little further out than we wanted but we have a dog and it was difficult to find a landlord that would allow dogs both inside and out. But our rental is very nice and today we fetched our dear Rosie back from Melbourne so our family is now complete. Yes we drove the 9 hours there and back over 2 days. At least we got to see some remote parts of SA. Boy were they remote!!!!!!!!!!
OH applied for 4 jobs in once week and now starts work monday. He is a butcher although we came on my visa for a nurse he starts work first. He advises to go for anything that is advertised and something will come of it. His job is in a meat factory. Plenty of jobs around, also bring your knives with you. Learn to bone on the hook or be flexible enough to learn (beef) - hope this makes sense to others butchers. Jobs advertised every night in the paper.
Adelaide itself is lovely and the people we have found everyone extremly helpful. We have been to wildlife parks and drove up and down the cost. We havent really found anything we dont like about the place.
I am in the process of enrolling my 16 yr old son into school as education is offered up to the age of 18. He is now looking forward to it. We know have to decide which school, also remember that you have to pay a supplement for the education here and if they do any college course through (tafe) similar to technical college we have to pay for the course. but at least he has a second chance here.
My daughter is struggling to get work but something will come.
We have bought a car easy but its a 1.8 mannual and it is considered small for here they all seem to be 4.0 engine size.
Mototrcyles they are very expensive here beware, anything under 8,000 dollars is either vary old or not worth bothering with. But will still keep looking you never know.
For anyone still waiting to come just be flexible and enjoy the experience. We have enjoyed ourselves so far.
I would just like to say a big thank you to all the people on here who have helped us out before we came. Your knowledge and advice has been invaluable.

Hi Helen and Tony

What a great post and thank you for taking the time to write it. As you know everyone back here loves to hear how the new ones get on when they first arrive.

Really pleased for you Tony getting yourself a job. Good luck for Monday your first day.

Good luck to you Helen finding yourself a job and I hope you daughter has luck in getting one soon. (Do you want me to keep fingers crossed for you Helen on the job front or would you like to be a lady of leisure for a bit!) :D I would!!!

Glad you've secured and rental and pleased you now have your dog back. So all the family is complete now. I look forward to your views on the school once your son has started. Our daughter will be 17 when we arrive and we have considered Blackwood area just like Gina and family.

Anyway good luck and we look forward to another informative post a little further on :D

Take care

:D Wow you have been busy little bees haven't you. Bet your feet haven't touched the ground.

Just a thanks really for letting us have a little window into what your life has been like and what you have achieved since you got there. It's really helpful for all us wannabes back here in the UK to read about the experiences of new immigrants.

Do keep posting - we like updates and congratulations on your new life
