Title: Flinders Ranges
Description: getting away from it all!

If you've lived in Adelaide for a while and haven't been up to the Flinders Ranges for a long week end, at least, then you've missed a spectacular part of what South Australia has to offer.
The Flinders Ranges is Outback.
There are camping spots in several places . . one of my favourites being Brachina Gorge . . aboriginal paintings, cave dwellings, rugged scenery, Wilpena Pound, etc.
You'll find spring a great time to see the wildflowers painting the hillsides with purples and reds for miles. Summer is good for skinny dipping in the rock pools in the gorges, and winter a great time to bush walk through the Ranges, as the days are cool and nights cold (take a beanie to keep your ears warm!)

We're off for a few days in Quorn at the end of September, when my parents will be with us!

Don't forget the Wallaroos bouncing past the tent every evening. BTW there is a motel, bar and restaurant in Wilpena if you're not into bush camping.

Just got back from the Flinders, a truly fantasic place to see. Stayed at the Wilpeena pound resort great accomodation. The shop at the resort is a bit pricy so if your camping stock up before you go. personally roughed in a hotel room..........lol
Did lots of sightseeing much to see........A four wheel drive would be an advantage but there is a lot you can see in an average family car (in Wilpeena reserve).
P.s. Be carefull of Kangaroos there are heaps. so slow down and avoid driving at night or dusk if you can. As an ex Panel Beater I can tell you if you hit a Roo and you are driving at even a moderate speed your Holiday will be instantly over!
(No Car No more Holiday).......... :D

Wish i'd found this thread before we went.
Stayed at Wilpena Pound for 3 nights absolutely lovely place and well worth a visit, just watch for the pilot in the Bar on an evening ;) ;)
Hit a Big Red at about 100kph came out from no where ! Luckily he skidded and hit the bottom of the hire car. Bent the rad the bumper and number plate (Hubbie pulled out dent and nice pilot at Wilpena helped straighten the number plate and fill in with black marker pen). Luckily lived to tell the tale, as informed later over a Bottle of complimentary Red some don't (and that's not just the Kangaroo).

If visiting Wilpena Pound - Skytrek is fantastic (and even a little bit scary in places) the scenery from the top is fantastic. A 4WD is a must though.
