I've never had air-conditioning. I have a fan on a stand ($5 from a garage sale) and I wear a wet t-shirt.

Wet sheets, wet clothes, water bed on cold, go in the pool (again), pedestal fans, ummmmmm go to the pics, the mall, a friends house where it's cool, walk along the beach (no swimming in the sea after dusk).

I can't get the air con to work in my house and it's soooooooo annoying

A bucket of cold water and dip your tootsies in, works a treat, if my feet are cold then so am I, if there hot then yeap you guessed it so am I.

A friend of mine in Sydney used to have a bucket of ice and direct her fan on it and it would blow icy cold air around at least till the ice melts.

Most people seem to head to the malls, cinemas etc. when it gets really hot ..

we do have a pool, but in the UK (on the odd occassion that it would get too hot) we would put a couple of inches of cold water in the bath and just dip in and have a splash ever so often when you heat up, tumkins suggestion of wet t-shirt would work too.

People at my work are into these - see here, but we do sell them, so might be why - claim they are fab!

ice in front of the fan sounds good, I believe a wet sheet in front of an open window is good too (but that could just be for dryness). Keeping the blinds and curtains closed.

We use those neck buddy things at work and they are really good. Just have to remember not to stick em in the freezer because it mucks up the silicon beads. Just soak them for a few minutes in cool water until the silicon swells up and they are great. I used mine all day yesterday, trying to get one for my doggie now.

If you can order them through an industrial suppliers catalogue (eg Bianco) they are only about $9 each. Our welders have special ones to put under their welding helmets.

And I jumped in the pool a few minutes ago and am lovely and cool now.

Er we live in the hills but we face west and when the sun starts its descent in the afternoon, it's like being in an oven. And the gully breeze in this neck of the woods is like an industrial hair dryer. Lush. :o Not.

We got some pedestal fans for $14 each at Bunnings. I think they might be Government assisted price cuts to stop people dying :P

My way to keep cool is to move as little as possible or find excuses to go for a drive/ to the shops where someone else is paying for the a/c. We have one unit which only cools the formal lounge, where we never go because there's no tv aerial. <_<

When I get really hot I cool myself down with a nice cup of Yorkshire Tea.

But, it's still 4 degrees cooler than the city, and after it goes down it cools down faster.
