Hi Sue,
Are you after primary or secondary schools?
I have had an 'interview' with the head of the catholic primary school in Aberfoyle Park back in March, along with my daughter Megan (who was 6 in January). It was very informal and there wasn't a problem with availability of places. At that time, the head said Megan would be put straight into year two just based on her reading skills, so they are very open to placing according to ability. As I'm sure you know, all catholic schools are fee-paying in SA and the total annual fee for the School of the Nativity in 2004 is $1497, which is discounted by 12% for 2 children, 20% for 3 children and 28% for 4 children.
As far as non-replies to emails - I've found this to be very common for Oz schools! They are far more laid-back in their approach to enrolment enquiries than we are used to in the UK, as they are to viewing the school. There is rarely a need to pre-book an appointment, if you just turn up at reception invariably you will be taken round on an ad hoc basis. Such a refreshing change not to be bogged down by 'red tape'!
I wasn't aware of any catholic schools in Hallet Cove, but you can check them all out on this site:
