Title: Happy living in Adelaide
Tyke - January 24, 2007 09:57 PM (GMT)
This might give a clearer indication than reading through some of the recent posts.

I've been here since 1990 and wouldn't go back to the UK for quids. No, we didn't have it easy when we arrived, there was a recession on and Mr Adelaidegirl was made redundant 3 times in 3 years, but at no stage did we consider going back ... we love the outdoorsy lifestyle, the houses (far better than we could afford back in Portsmouth), the cars (love those V6's), oh I could go on and on, but basically we are both totally happy with our lives here and grateful to the Aussie government for giving us the opportunity to come here.
Since we've been here my brother-in-law and his family have emigrated (2 years ago) and they have settled well and love it here. Finding regular work in his trade took a while but now he has work coming out of his ears, the car, house, lifestyle that they were seeking.
My cousin and her family emigrated 3 weeks ago and have already bought a house, car, got the kids in school, sorted out jobs etc ... yes, his job pays less than the UK but the hours are fewer, their house is much bigger than their UK one, the kids have enrolled in horse-riding, football and other sports, they love the beaches, the city, in fact everything about the place. They know they will have homesick moments, and bills to pay (no different to UK there!), but after reading some of the recent posts on here from people who have been disappointed in Adelaide they wonder if they are reading about the same place. Different strokes for different folks ...

Gjn200 - January 25, 2007 05:43 AM (GMT)
Can there be a 'happy, but I don't live in Adelaide, thats why I'm happy' option ;)

I'm really happy here. Been here 7 months now and you wouldn't get me back to the UK if my life depended on it.
Just about to take the plunge and buy a house, once that's done I will have everything I wanted from our move here and more :)
Pommygirl - January 25, 2007 08:32 AM (GMT)
Even after the awful year I had last year with my health, I'm still happy to be in Australia.
Adelaide is ok - haven't lived anywhere else in Oz so can't really say but what I do know is that my OH family always end up back in Adelaide and they've lived all over Oz.

denisenross - January 25, 2007 11:46 AM (GMT)
Happy in Adelaide?-yes
Have ups and downs...as you would anywhere
Miss England?-occasionally, family and friends mainly
It can be hard, make no mistake, but you make what you can of situations and learn by mistakes, you just have to remember to move on and remember its down to you at the end of the day.
Still early days for us though.

37 years here and I am deleriously happy and have been for years. We all have our ups and downs no matter where we live but I have to say I am always very happy to return HOME especially on the international flights when they start playing Peter Allen prior to landing :D

After reading several 'heated' threads lately on the quality of life in Adelaide it is nice to see some simple figures speaking for themselves ;) :D
Lisa :D

Thanks Mick.
I became fed up with the recent threads - I really should not get drawn in.
So figures will speak for themselves.

I voted Happy. We have our up's and downs like most people but I'd say we are fairly happy in the long run.

I'm sure you will be delirious,I really can't see why you can't have PR.

Hi Tyke,
Because we are on the SIR Visa and we have to be here 2 years to meet the conditions of the visa. Everything is nearly ready to go in the post on the 17th Feb
then we just wait for DIMIA to say Yes

This really was such a good idea and will hopefully settle some nerves back in the UK. I do remember sitting there in the UK reading such posts with a very sinking feeling.
Not everyone likes to post on such a heated subject, and hopefullyl most regulars will take the time to click a box.
Its good to see so many happy people here :D - and yes, we're one of them.

not wanting to start a row or anything, but i dont think votes from those who've been here less than 6 months should be taken too seriously.
simon - January 27, 2007 11:32 PM (GMT)
I can agree with that sean. And on the flip side, people should not take too much notice of things which are said after a 3 week reccie to adelaide....
Anyways i am Happy living in adelaide. I would like to give things a try in queensland though. But wonder how happy I will be living in the rat race up there. well SE queensland

Hi,
Just wondering how many are Happy living in Adelaide for now, but are just sitting tight until they've fulfilled their visa requirements, and will be off interstate as soon as their 2 years is up ?

Interesting point.Love to see what people say.
Another poll can be arranged.
From our point of view we did say that if we did not like it here in SA we would look at other states when we could.Rather returning back to the UK.
I see Sean's point as well but I hope the poll gives at least a general overview of the state of play here.
I have learned rapidly that you cannot please all of the people all of the time.
;) ;)

When we arrived in Adelaide some 8 months ago I was of the impression that Adelaide wouldn't be home forever.
We went to Perth at Christmas and as this was my childhood home I felt it would be where I would want to settle eventually.
After spending a couple of weeks there it put me off a bit and I am in no rush to return there in the near future.
It was lovely to come back to Adelaide and I felt more at home than I had done previously.
I still think that Adelaide hasn't got that certain something that I am looking for and I don't know where my family will end up in years to come.
We want to do a bit of travelling then maybe we will find exactly where we want to settle.
For now we are happy but definitely not deliriously happy.
As for moving on when we have fulfilled our visa requirements why not we have to report to DIMA or whatever it is called these days. And when our time is up we ARE free to move interstate if we wish. We are not obliged to stay after all it's not a prison sentence.

Speaking personally, I'm glad to hear both sides of the story, as I believe in the saying that knowledge is power. I don't think I would trust people if everyone went on about how wonderful life was, with no drawbacks - I just cannot accept that life is like that anywhere. What I'm looking for in Adelaide is a life which is better than where I am now, with a better future for my children, and the chance to experience a different culture to the one I know. Thanks to all who have posted - both positive and negative.

Been here 2 years in April. Voted HAPPY.
Hated it for the first 6 - 12 months.

Thanks to everyone who has voted so far.
If anyone has not please do as this will give a clear and representative average view of how many people are happy living here in Adelaide.

Great post - we are extremely happy. Life here is brilliant once you get over missing friends and family (not sure you ever get over it but at leat that shock factor). We have a better quality of life, are much more laid back, people are friendlier, friends are easy to make - it is all here if you want it. But obviously we appreciate we are fairly new to Oz - now here for 7 months.

Can I ask the moderators if this thread can be placed in the FAQ once activity dies down?
It is a fair indicator of the "happiness quotient"
