Description: Medicare

Ok

So I have satisfied myself with the state pension questions (for now anyway)

Next on the list

Medical

Does the $29000 dollars that you pay for the CP visa contribute anything towards medical care or will my parents be expected to pay extra for healthcare costs.

ie what can they expect to pay for example:

They go to the GP with a sprain, and need to go to hospital to have it xrayed.

(they are both over 65)

thanks

Hi Toontoon

Quote from Immigration website: http://www.immi.gov.au/migrants/family/parent/143/index.htm

"What does this visa let me do?

This visa allows you, your accompanying spouse and dependent family members to live as permanent residents in Australia.

You can also:
work and study in Australia
receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)
sponsor people for permanent residence (subject to waiting periods)."

In answer to your question above, and in light of the fact that they will be covered by Medicare, then if they went to a 'bulk billing' surgery such as Marion Domain they could see the doc and have the X-ray done (in the same building) for free. Not all doctors 'bulk bill' and there may be extra charges to pay in those instances, known as 'the gap'.

Basically the govt pays a standard fee for various doc's services, but docs may choose to charge more, in which case you have to pay the difference.

Ok thanks

Another question: say for example I needed to put my parent in an old peoples home or assisted care home? Do they have such things and what are the price differences compared to the UK

They do have them - there are several around and I know people who work in them. But don't know about fees or how they would be charged (will watch with interest as my parents have just applied for their CPV at end of Jan so might be out here in just over a year!!!)

The CP visa gives the same rights as any other PR visa. The only difference it that the AOS is for 10 years and is $14000 for a couple.

Therefore, as I said elsewhere, medicare is included and full work rights.
