Hello all .
Always looking for bricklayers. I pay $25 - $30 per hour working on timber framed house's in the northern subs craigmore/gawler as there seems to be plenty of work this way..
All you need is an ABN number.
As to work as a sub contractor you need licence meaning you need to go back to school and pass finacial planning and law that take a bout 16 weeks and then a further 2 months to get interview.
thanks

Thanks Jason, Ralph sent you an email this morning. Is that the going rate? Looks like we'll have to rethink.Do they not charge by the 1000 like on sights here?We expected a cut with Ralph having to work for someone but thats alot less.Iwouldnt like to think i was paying brickies by the hour.Do they not drag out the job, they would in England!!Does anyone else know if you still have to go back to school, if you can proove youve run a V.A.T reg LTD company for 7+ years ,as a working company director,to learn what you already know?Advice would be appreciated.THANKS..Bev. p.s Hey Hey we dont know what one is either!

An ABN is an Australian Business Number, a number which you use on all dealings which involve taxable income and expenses to identify your business and claim and pay tax.
All companies and self employed have them.

If you want an honest answer, forget everything you've ever done in the Uk if you decide to get here, it won't get you anywhere. You'll still have to do all the courses and a financial planning course if you want to be a subbie.
We came here (Steves a chippie) having run a limited company for 12 years, and been self employed for nearly 20 years. We turned up with references from customers and builders we worked for. Copies of all Steves qualifications, references from the CITB and the Master Builders Association. We came here with the intention of setting up just as we were in the UK and in the end Steve went into site management because it was easier.
They offered Steve a 2nd fix licence and he had to be supervised. Most jobs here are a fixed price basis. you don't have to quote for jobs, the bigger builders tell you what the are prepared to pay you. Obviously if you are going into the extensions side of building you'll quote for jobs but I think you'll find the wages here no way reflect what you get in the UK.
As Jason said, theres work around, lots in the northern suburbs and the southern suburbs. Jobs don't get advertised much, you'll have to go round sites or contact site supervisors to get work.
If you are going to look for private work then its just a case of advertising in the paper, yellow pages etc.
Don't want to sound all doom and gloom but theres no point coming here thinking lifes going to be like the UK when in fact its much harder.
Try PM-ing The McGintys, Ross is a brickie in the northern suburbs. He might be able to help.

As an employer if they are not up to it. good days work get rid of (no passengers on the train )...... You are running a business no different from uk work hard and get paid well.....

Quite simply, if your coming here for great wages forget it !!! the building trade pays nothing like the UK on site or private.
You can make a reasonable wage by Australian standards, but not a great wage by international standards like you get in the UK.
But it is sunny, lovely and warm, so atleast if your poor you dont have to buy a coat..... :D

Hi Jo,we know the wages will be less, and that ill have to go back to school now!!Im glad theres plenty work around ,never been scared of it ,You say that compared to the standard aussie wages there good. Untill we come over for a reccie in sept were not going to know how prices of cars food clothes compare. Is that cheaper to reflect the lower wages. Thank god the houses are cheap! got to go to work now,at least its not raining 5.5oc . Ralph.

If all goes to plan,we get our visa ,decide to make the move, E bay will be very buisy with all our cast off coats and woolys.
MMM ,maybe i should sell them all now while the weathers at its worse.?
More money for the trip over in sept. Then if it doesnt go to plan, i can buy more!! Bev

Don't be too hasty getting rid of those winter coats until you've experienced a cold winter snap over here ;)
Apparently some people feel the cold more so than others but to be honest the Winter weather IMHO is quite mild.
