Description: Are these licences recognized in SA

I have a HGV & PCV UK driving licence and was just wondering if they will be recognized in SA, or will I have to retake the tests in SA. :help:

I'm pretty sure the only parts of your registration you can transfer are a car ( up to 4.5 tonne i think ) and a motorbike. Did my semi course about a year ago but before you can do it you have to do a two day theory course called a TILE course. This is so you can go from a car to a HC (heavy combined) otherwise you would have to slowly work your way up through the separate classes. To pass you have to do a log book and have so many numbers of hours before you can pass. Not sure if any of this has changed.
Forgot to say for the PCV you have to have a medical and a police check then get it sent off for approval, if alls ok it gets added to your licence. No more driving tests for that one.

I had UK HGV class 1, and changed my licence for an SA one and got HC (Class 1 equivalent) on it too, without taking any tests, just my photo taken and got a licence in the post.

Paul

Oh good has there been a rule change then? As I know a few people who only got a car licence but it was about a year ago.

I got mine changed over in July 2006, with no problems at all.
Good luck with it,
Paul

I think that this, like every other government department, depends on who you talk to and serves you on the day. :sigh:
I changed my licence last March and I had HGV class 1 on it. The guy point blank refused to swap the class over to the Oz licence and said that I'd have to do the whole test again!!!

Probably best to email the Department of Transport and get a written ruling from them as there is nothing currently on their website that confirms the answer to your question either way.
At least that way if you have the reply in writing no matter what the clerk says at the desk you will have confirmation from one of their superiors as to whether you are permitted to just transfer your license without going through the testing rigmarole.

I agree with Jet - get something in writing from Transport SA. I work with a guy from Poole (18 months in Adelaide) who has just about every British truck licence going, and he has not been able to transfer them over, he's given up now.

Many Thanks to all the replys !!!! I think I will definately contact Transport SA for confirmation about this!!!

Can you make sure you post the answer guys? I asked about this at Marion rego centre just last week and was told I would need to take the test again to get my class 1 moved over?
Cheers, Karl.

Like I said in a previos reply, no test is needed. Ive had mine changed over and didnt take any test, just filled in the form, paid my fee, had my photo taken and that was it. I changed mine over in July 2006.

Paul

My husband lost his HGV class 1 aswell, cos they wouldn't transfer it over to his license. This was in April 2006.
