What exactly do you want to know, Jo? We have been very impressed with the school. The daughter has thrived there and has settled very well. They have good options to cater for different types of students when they get to their senior years. They offer a wide variety of VET courses, SACE or IB diploma. The school follows the International Baccalaureate programme right through from year 8 to year 12. There is a lot of sports on offer, as Chris has mentioned and the girls soccer and netball teams, were no 1 in the state. Performing arts is also very strong and the school has an excellent music department. Another strength is Maths and Science.
The teachers are very laid-back and friendly and most of the students seem to enjoy school. I would say the onl slight drawback is that the groups are all mixed ability so that the faster learners are often a bit bored in the younger years, but not so in the senior years. Kids can ask for any subject they want to take and if there are enough students wanting it, the school will arrange for a teacher or for extra classes in the afternoon or at the language school for instance. Chris, maybe you could speak to someone about what you really want to do.
Here is the school website.
http://www.bhs.sa.edu.au/There is a good mixture of kids. My daughter has mentioned that there seems to be a bit of a divide between those who are regarded as "popular" and those who are "different" or "geeky". Make sure your kids can handle this. There are a significant number of "fake" girls as well who seem to be spending more time doing their make up and maintaining their fake hair, fake nails, and fake tans than doing any school work.... However for a talented, hard-working kid they have the opportunity to steam ahead and outshine the rest who are too lazy or too spoilt to bother too much with school. Discipline is quite good and kids are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and for looking after their fellow students. There is an excellent peer support programme.
There are people who bring or bus their kids to the school from areas outside of the catchment because of the good reputation. On the other hand, I also know of a person or two who have moved their kids out of the school, mainly because of the competitive atmosphere.
You could do a lot worse than send your kid to this school. I work at a very prestigious private school where Blackwood High is known and admired by reputation. That says quite a lot IMHO
