Description: moving pets to Adelaide

bakerstreet - February 27, 2007 01:12 PM (GMT)
Hi we are moving out to Oz in September,
We have a little dog we want to take with us as the kids love him so much
Has anybody out there took their pets with them? Who did you use to get them over to Adelaide? & how much did it cost
Thanks for any information

Costs depends on the size of the dog.

We shipped a West Highland White Terrier out last year, using Golden Arrow Pet shippers, (they were great)

The total cost including all vet fees, bloodtests, shipping, quarantine fees was about 2000 pounds.

Bigger the dog the shipping cost will increase.

Well worth the money though

We didn't ship pets but I've read elsewhere that there is currently a 5 month wait for quarentine so I'd start looking into different shippers very soon if I were you.

Hello and welcome to the mad house!

We shipped Scooby with a company called Par Air, based in Colchester, Essex.

They were fantastic :yeehah: , a real personal service! We didnt have an easy time as Scooby failed one of his blood tests and the results came back 5 days before we flew out! There was a mad panic to get him re-tested, and even though he was cleared to fly the afternoon before we left he ended up missing his origional flight (it was canceled when he failed his test) and having to stay in kennels for 12 days instead of 3 as planned. The office staff (Rachel - a mine of doggy infomation) and the kennel maid were reassuring, and they let my family visit to take him out for walks. If you are from the area i highly recommend them. One of the best pieces of advice they gave me was to type up an 'all about me' sheet for Scoobs. His likes, dislikes, training and commands to use, temprement, any little 'ways' he had (ie he hates hoovers and lawnmowers), food, medical history, etc. I did a little life story for him as hes a rescue dog. They semt it on to ydney with his crate, and i e mailed it on as well. At least then i knew i hd told them s much as i could about him to make his stay happier!

When he eventually arrived he stayed at Eastern Creek, Sydney. Origionally he was going to Spotswood, Melbourne but this does get very booked up. We were visiting friends in Sydney over New Year anyway so decided to make it a holiday and dog collection in one! Aparently they get much less booked up as its much bigger! The kennels even let Scoobs stay for an extra few nights so we could enjoy the fireworks without having to worry about him, and we picked him up on 2nd January. Again they were helpful, although sometimes hard to get the office on the phone you can phone your dogs kennelmaid direct!

Scooby was no worse for his big adventure and long absence from us. But he is used to kennels and is not a stressy sort of dog. He rarely barks and isnt fussed about much aslong as he gets fed, watered and played with. We sent him a parcel of toys and treats over from Adelaide on the advice of the kennelmaid, as they cant have anything with them to travel! He strolled out when we arrived to collect him as if we had only left him yesterday! He could have pretended to miss us! It took him a week or so to get used to the heat as it was really hot them, but now hes fine and lazes under the campervan most of the day! Rouses himself for a walk when it cools off and hubbie gets in from work, then loves his evening visit to the beach or walk along the cliffs.

Bringing out a dog is a big decision. Its not cheap and it can be stressfull for the dog (depends on the dog) Personally age was a big factor for me. Scooby is a 6 year old border collie and we felt he would adapt well and had plenty of life left in him. Also my son would have been heartbroken to leave him! I always said he had to leave enough behind without leaving the dog too! They have grown up together and Scooby has been there as long as Charlie can remember, well thats my excuse and im sticking to it!

I recon it cost us about £2200 in all, including 2 lots of bloods, shipping, English kennel fees, Sydney kennel fees, insurance and permits.

Cant think of anything else Scooby related, but if you have any qustions or want some more specific prices Pm me and ill dig out all the paperwork.

Deb
