Title: Online furniture stores?
Description: Anyone have a web address
leewilson - February 28, 2007 02:40 PM (GMT)
Hi we are trying to figure out what it is worth taking with us to Adelaide and so what we need is online furniture stores in Adelaide to compare cost of shipping to cost of selling and re purchasing on arrival in Australia.
If anyone in Adelaide can recommend online shops it would be a great help.
Thanks Lee

I reckon you've just about come up with the most popular ones.

Unfortunately the internet is not as widely used in Oz as the UK, they tend to use leaflets here. Our letterbox gets stuffed twice a week with leaflets for furniture stores, electrical stores, food stores, tatt shops, etc. Which doesnt help migrants...
We sold most of our furniture to the buyers of our house, so had to buy new. This is what we paid:
Lounge suite $1600 (in sale, would budget $2500)
Dining suite $950
Outdoor setting $1299 (Huge table/10 padded chairs, could have spent 1/2 that!!)
BBQ $700
2 Double beds $1500
We then spent over $3000 in Ikea buying bookcases/dining cabinet/desks/chairs for the kids rooms and the rumpus.
Total spend was around $10000.
Would I do the same again? Debateable!!! It is nice to have new furniture, but if you have kids, it is a nightmare traipsing around MANY stores miles apart on the search for that perfect sofa.
Vera.
p.s. Talking of sofas, I found the fashion here is currently brown (beige/chocolate/latte) and the popular fabrics are leather and suede.

I'm sure that one of the shippers has a web site where you can click on the furniture you want to take with you and it comes up with prices to ship / insure / replace. Quite interesting.
If memory serves me right, it could be this on John Mason web site.
http://www.johnmason.com/int_home.htmlHave to agree with Vera - sounds like fun going around choosing new things - but add a couple of kids to the equation and the appeal soon fades! We only had to choose a sofa and dining table and chairs. Even without kids we would have found it hard going , there are soooo many shops here and there are ALWAYS offers and sales going on.
Its also good for the kids to have a sense of their stuff around them to help settle in.

Thanks for your replies i have had a look at the sites and they seem ok. Still undecided though!!

Hi
It depends what you are bringing, whether it is new or sentimental. We had no good furniture to bring and just bought personal stuff and some electrical items.
Spent about $20-25k in setting up the house (Lounge, Kitchen, Dining, 3 bedrooms, bbq & outdoor eating), but now wish we had left some of the electrical items in uk as it is cheaper to buy new out here.
Also stores will usually give you discount if you pay cash for items.
Hope this helps
Sandra

It depends how hard you haggle. I recommend you start at 15% discount, and then negotiate for more, especially if you are buying lots!
