It seems to be a bit of a lottery whether it's possible to connect to broadband where you end up. If it's important to you it might be worth checking before you commit to the house!

Some places are cabled but in our case the cable crosses the street in front of our house and they said it was too far away to cable us.

So we had to do it via the telephone line but our area is on 'pair gain' ie party line, ie one copper wire serves two lines/houses. As it happened we're probably one of the first in the street to ask for broadband and they juggled copper wires (switch at the exchange rather than physically) to give us a whole copper wire to ourselves. Our dial up access time immediately doubled from 23k to 46k!

Then they were able to connect us to broadband. If you get stuck in a pair gain area you'll only end up with half-speed dial up and a lottery chance of getting onto broadband :(

This whole palaver took us nearly two months when we were repeatedly told we simply couldn't have broadband and it was only through hours of internet research on Howard's part that he found the right facts to nag them with to get it done, we really believed for some time that we'd never get it.

We have a long way to go yet, so hopefully by the time we get over there broadband might be more widespread.

Definitely going to need it though...

I guess the newer suburbs, with newer services, might be better (we're in a 30 year old area) but that's only a hunch....

Dont count on it!!

Bill read a newspaper article a couple of months back. A guy who lives at Sheidow Park (brand new housing estate) is fighting Telstra over their ridiculous decision to install old and antiquated phone systems on the new development which STILL doesnt allow its residents access to broadband!!!...can you believe that?...
