Title: Alcohol....
Description: a necessary evil?
gonga - March 15, 2007 12:56 PM (GMT)
so....
is alcohol (meaning the stuff that you find in drinks) any good, or should it be banned? And if so, should it be replaced with something else (origami perhaps) or not...?

And think of all the foam stubby holders that will have to go through extensive retraining and therapy to be used for "soft drinks".

if alcohol was removed from public useage, I wonder what would become of all those redundant words like stubby and shot and claret and so on...would we find them huddled around old punctured oil drums warming themselves on the the meagre flames amid the harsh winter which usually goes hand in hand with social verbal isolation...awww the poor things...
maybe a charity could be set up with adverts on the tv to try to convince us of the need to foster and adopt little stubbies with no homes to go to since being evicted from the wider community.
maybe amaze ones dinner guests while they sup their dandelion and burdock from reconstituted stemmed w!ne glasses, 'oh I know, aren't they just adorable...yes, go on stroke them: they won't bite...' :loopy:

although i drink alcohol, (red wine mostly), i never understand the need for some people to drink themselves into such a state where they are staggering around, throwing up, starting fights, collapsing, and pissing in their bed.
and although i have been totally wasted, i could never make a habit out of it. I used see the same people get in a right state regularly.
something a little sad about it.
worst state i got into was where everyone looked like someone else, that was weird.
later i weed in my wardrobe

Hmmmmm, so far a very one-sided debate, methinks.
Miiaaaoooow..( sound of cat being thrown amongst the pigeons ;) )...
As a mind altering "drug", alcohol should be treated the same as all other mind altering "drugs". Either all should be illegal, or all legal. ( Though, if the Prime Minister is reading this.....please, please don't make alcohol illegal in MY lifetime ! And don't even think about making chocolate, illegal!!! :P )
Another aspect worth considering.......Should those who continue to abuse "drugs" of any kind, including of course, alcohol, and as a direct result of that abuse, damage their health, have to pay for their own treatment ? Is it fair that the NHS, with its limited budget, should pay for say a liver transplant, thus denying another patient the use of those funds, if the liver transplant patient continues to drink, or re-starts drinking after the op? Should hospitals offer a "loan" to cover the cost of the treatment in cases where the ailment is a direct result of self abuse, with that "loan" only ever having to be repaid if the patient deliberately "undoes" the treatment by continuing to drink/smoke etc etc etc ? Or should everyone be entitled to one chance, but if they re-start drinking, or whatever, THEN be denied any further free treatment for conditions caused by their drinking, etc?
And...should those who start fights, cause accidents, cause damage to property, etc etc etc whilst drunk, have to pay for the cost of the policing and the repairs and the ambulances etc etc??

Would the government ever ban alcohol/smoking....nnnnnooooooooooooooo........they make too much money out of them in taxes.
Why should someone who drinks/ smokes have to pay for NHS treatment, after all........they would have payed so much more into the government coffers than someone who didnt. So relatively speaking.........theyve paid for their extra treatment that they may require.
PS.I used to smoke...............and used to drink................. :D

I'm a smoker contributing to the government coughers!
They ain't making anything out of me on the alcohol front though - I don't touch the stuff.

Bill Hicks covered all this a long time ago -
It ran along the lines of how many pot smokers do you know who have beaten/raped/killed someone, lost their job, house, family, car, everything?
Shame he never got the chance to really shine. :(
