Title: Medicals
Description: What's involved for the visa
Claire & Bruce - August 20, 2004 06:26 PM (GMT)
Hi all,
I just thought it might be useful for people who aren't yet at the medical stage to know what's involved. I certainly didn't know until I got there :loopy: . If there is a web site or link about this I certainly didn't find it. Correct me if I am wrong anyone?!
The reason I started this thread is that the medical was my biggest concern. I am, shall we say, a little 'large' (I don't like the word 'obese' ) and my biggest fear was that we wouldn't get our visas because of me! My agent assured me that it shouldn't be a problem although he did blink nervously I thought when he worked out my BMI and said I should try to loose weight before the medical!!!!
As I recall, from April, the medical involved the following:-
- height and weight
- blood pressure
- urine test - for protein, sugar and blood
- Eye Test
- Test reflexes
- Feel tummy
- Men/Boys - Examine testes (sp?) (my four year old was not impressed!)
- Women - Breast Examination
- Examine ears/eyes
Then there were a lot of questions about past illnesses, operations, investigations, etc. It was really all very basic stuff - nothing in lots of depth and they didn't request my medical records like I thought they would. There was a declaration page at the end for the doctor to say whether or not they thought this person would be able to work - all they are really interested in it would seem!
As our financial advisor said, the whole migration process is set up so that people can pay into the system for at least 20 years (from 45 - upper migration age to 65 - offical retirement age) before they start taking anything out. They want to ensure that migrants are not going to be a 'burden' on the state.
So.....as long as you are 'warm and upright', you shouldn't have anything to worry about! :eyes mouth:
Hope this is helpful and, if I have missed anything out, let me know!

hi
What about blood tests and x-rays?
i have an 11 year old, and i have had conflicting views of whether she will have an x-ray, not that i am worried about that, but i have also read that under 13 kids don't have medical.
a bit confused!

all applicants have medicals no matter what age they are not sure about how old they have to be for xrays ive also read that not all doctors do the boobie n puds test lol so it depends on which doctor you see

i worked in the department of haematology for 7 years hoping to overcome the fear but i still don't like blood.

Hiya,
Had our medicals this week, see link
http://s2.invisionfree.com/Adelaidebrits/i...?showtopic=2709Children under 15 do not need bloods, I think it was xrays for 11 and above.
We didn't have booby's or pud's tested!!
We went to Nottingham Nuffield.

Yes, all members of the family have medicals including our 4 years old son and our daughter who was only 18 months at the time. They wanted to make sure their development was 'normal'. They didn't have to have a blood test or chest X-Ray.
Mandy - I am nore sure at what age they have to have a chest X-Ray.
We had chest X-rays and a HIV test which is compulsory for adults. Also, as my husband had a total blood transfusion at birth, he also had to have an additional blood test for Hepititus.
The doctors told me I could object to the breast examination and she would note my reasons but I just wanted my visa so I said 'go ahead'!!
Be warned, medicals are expensive - ours were about £480 and the additional blood test for my husband was £80!!! :loopy:
You get a list of doctors who are approved so you can't just go to your own doctor. We ended up driving to Maidenhead from Milton Keynes as we were not given much time to get our medicals and police checks done (it was getting towards the end of the migration year and they were trying to fill their quotas!!). Many places were booked up several weeks in advance and we wanted somewhere were we could have the X-Rays done at the same time and not many places did this. With the kids running round we both had higher than normal blood pressure but they obviously didn't hold this against us :bouncing smiles:

I am also a large person and have had to go through hoops over my medical. This is because i am a diabetic and they require extra tests for this to make sure you do not have any conditions that can be associated with it. I did pass the test according to my doctor, but feeling very nervous and tense because of the waiting to hear back from them. This is the deciding factor on our application as everything else is done and dusted. I spoke to the section manager at the immigration department to arrange plans for travel to NZ (re Bills dad) and she says that i will be contacted by phone as soon as a decision is made, which will probably be within the next week or so...but the tension and suspense is killing me!!....

I too was quite worried about the medical, in fact I stopped smoking in January in preperation and rejoined the gym (the best thing I ever did - give up smoking that is). The medical was a breeze, the only concern being I had to have an extra blood test due to tatoos - but 10 days later phoned the doc and he told me everything was cushty and the medicals had arrived in Adelaide.
don't worry about a thing

If you refer to my brand new FAQ Index over on the faq page you will find several threads where people have mentioned what happened in their medicals and where they had them. There seem to be different experiences depending on where you go! Good luck to you all - I missed out on that bit as I was born here and I'm already a citizen, despite leaving before my 1st birthday

For an older woman I'm sure it shouldn't affect me this way but whenever I see your postings I come over all peculiar!
It's Legolas, I'm drooling here!

Hi
Our kids who are 10 & 8 didn't have blood tests or chest x-rays.
We were told aged 11 & above for x-rays and 15 and above for blood tests.
Hayley was 3 weeks old when she had hers and he checked her height, head circumference and listened to her heart, that was it. He said I assume shes had a full check at the hospital, to which I said yes and he charged me £35 for it.
The girls were weighed and measured. Had eye test, reflex test and listened to their chest. Also urine samples from both which I took pre-prepared in sample bottles.
Steve and I had all of the above plus chest x-rays and blood tests for HIV. Incidently Steve has a tattoo but didn't have an extra test for heppititis. He didn't do a body mass - just noted out weight. We paid £70 each and the girls £40.
The x-rays were extra on top, I think around £50 each, might have been more. That was at Dorchester Hospital and the Doctor was at Weymouth.

Jo,
Your medicals sure were cheap. We paid pretty much double that - I was done!!!
Doesn't seem to be any set rates for these private medicals so they can charge what they can get away with.
I guess there is a lesson there for people yet to have medicals - shop around if you have the luxury of time :)

Annie,
Have you seen him in 'Troy'
If not make sure you do!!
:bouncing smiles:
Anniegran - August 23, 2004 04:43 PM (GMT)
Hmmm, thought I'd look up 'Troy' and have found loads of still photographs of Orlando. I have to say he is a delight, though should I be saying this as he is younger than all of my children? :sign20:
Ah well! Us old uns can still have our dreams! :happy45:
I guess my love of Lord of the Rings and all things related to 'Middle Earth' makes Legolas very appealing, along with Aragorn of course. I guess I must be a Hobbit really!

Solihull/ Birmingham, near the airport.
And it was a male doctor, but he was very nice, more nervous than me I think!
