Title: England tops
evorobin - March 28, 2007 01:54 PM (GMT)
Went to the kite festival in Semaphore on Sunday and as usual poms were wearing England tops in Force. Even worse one the other day a guy in a Grey Daewoo car with Manchester United REGO plate and stickers wearing an England shirt.
I'm not saying turn your back on the UK but I cringe when I see it tbh. Am I the only one?
chris&sarah - March 28, 2007 07:19 PM (GMT)
I cant comment on living there but i cringe when i see the same sort of thing on holiday... toe curling eh!!

makes me want to run for the hills too :loopy:
May be that I was never into footy in Englnd anyway :lol2:
Antsy - March 28, 2007 09:38 PM (GMT)
I think that it's fine for people to wear their England tops and have their football/soccer teams on their reg. plates.
Why would it make you cringe? :sign69:
coombsie - March 28, 2007 10:25 PM (GMT)
I personally dont have a problem with people wearing football shirts or displaying private number plates. Isn,t that what makes us individuals, the fact that we don,t all do the same thing or support the same team. It certainly doesnt make me cringe. Each to their own, I say.
Coombsie. :D

Thank goodness you don't mind private plates
Just ordered mine for a new car.
They will have a lot to do with my name on here ;) ;)
BTW - Ain't it cheap to get hold of private plates here!
coombsie - March 28, 2007 11:57 PM (GMT)
Might be wrong on this, but does it not depend on what type of plate you have. I thought there were some that you just paid out a one off lump sum for but, there are also some where you buy them but then have to pay a fee each year.
Could be wrong though?.....................
Coombsie. :D
mysnix - March 29, 2007 12:02 AM (GMT)
My son wears soccer tops all the time - he has a selection:
2 England (red and white)
Birmingham City (bought by my Mum in a thoughtful way  )
Man U (who he actually supports)
Adelaide United (also supports)
Juventus (sp?) because someone gave him one once.
He isn't that bothered about which ones, I don't mind because they wash easy and don't need ironing ... But it does make me cringe when my daughter puts her England top on as well, I always feel like it looks like we are trying to make a statement!

Yes - there are quite a few different styles of plates.
The numerical ones are very expensive.
One with say .my name and then seperated with the SA emblem and 01 or whatever number is available is $170 as a one off fee.
If you have just a word / name - say AdBrits, that is $190 upfront and then $190 per year to keep it.
It was quite confuddling when I looked into it.It was a lot easier to go down to Rego and talk to someone.
I take it you are not in the traffic division? ;)
Have a look at............

Whats this thing about rego plates and soccer shirts, have you all got a identity crisis or what?????????????

lisa.nick - March 29, 2007 03:29 AM (GMT)
if football is your passion then surely you can't just give it up just because you moved to another country.
Anyway, I've seen aussies with england football tops on.
Deborah - March 29, 2007 08:38 AM (GMT)
Cant personally see what your problem is with people wearing england tops?
As long as they are not acting like hardcore football hooligans then no probs.
Have seen asian, african guys with england shirts on at the local market etc.
Is it a british thing to feel embarrased about displaying national pride with some people maybe?
Cant imagine an ozzie been embarrased about a fellow countryman wearing a footy/rugby top or any other nationalities come to think of it.

Makes me cringe and to an extent embarassed.
colin - March 29, 2007 10:31 PM (GMT)
Why does seeing an england shirt make you embarassed ?
Interesting you would need to mention this on here.
I found this site very useful when i was in the UK but unfortunately some people put some c**p threads on.
Agree "get a life".

I am afraid that I agree with Robin. Makes me cringe too.
For the ones who think we need to get a life, who is it that is getting worked up about it it most? :sign69:

This thread was put in chit chat, which is the correct place for it. Facts and information are held elsewhere in the forum.
I have fought for my 'old country' but don't feel the need to wear the t-shirt.

You can tell a lot about what people are like by the football top they are wearing.
There are a minority (or sometimes majority) that when they display the team's kit, also display their character. Loud, rowdy, football fan.

Oh no, your statement would be relevent if this was in the General Discussion forum but this is the Chit Chat forum, meaning we can chit and chat about whatever we feel like without relvence to Adelaide (as shown in the caption just under where you enter this section of the site).

Surely we are in Aus now a laid back place to say the least,If you want to wear a football top wear it ,Most people don't care ........ And if they do ... So what
we are in Aus now ,Some people forget there roots.
Deborah - March 30, 2007 01:17 PM (GMT)
Tend to agree with iron147, if you want to be image conscious and raise issues about what other people are wearing then maybe you should relocate to a more cosmopolitan area.
Coincidentally i do happen to drive a silver daewoo but not the one with the man united sticker or whatever.
is it also a crime to be driving a vehicle from a defunct korean car manufacturer?
Have only been in adelaide for three months and it seems really laid back compared to the UK. Less of a class system and keeping up with the jones's set up.
Probably why people like it in some respects.
You will be telling us next you will be joining tony blair in apologising for the slave trade next such is your shame in being british.

I don't really see what the problem is with wearing England shirts or footy shirts.
As for your statement Liam mmm even though i know what you mean its not fair to stereotype people just by what they wear. All my family wear their claret's top and they are proud to do so but this doesn't make them loud rowdy footy fans they never have been and never will be.
I have a personal number plate but it was bought for me for a present as ive always wanted one but could never afford the one we wanted in the UK.
We as a family don't have any statements to make we just buy and wear what we like when ever we like and to be honest its got nothing to do with anyone else. Just like anyone else can do they have a choice of what they can do and they do it.

If someone likes to wear a football shirt ..........fine
If someone doesnt and think its cringy...........fine
Meeeeeeeeeeee...............well.I think it belongs on the football field :D , unless you are going off to support your team.

No i don't cringe at all...but then i have a personalised plate WHUFC6.....can anyone guess the team? :lol2: :lol2:
I really can't see the problem....football shirts are great...don't need to iron them!
I was at a party a while ago and there was a kid wearing a Man utd shirt...(no taste!)...i assumed he was english...he wasn't he was aussie!...
So don't assume that everyone you see wearing a english team football shirt (and i don't mean the england top, i mean club football)...is english!
I wonder if the aussie's are really bothered about it?.....or is it just us english who seem to have a problem......

I think it's possibly more about what these things represent, rather than the actual items of clothing.
Something the Aussies would know little about I assume, which might explain their indifference
What they represent will also have different meanings for different folks....hence, some will like em, some not

you have lost me. A football top means you support a team in the same way a Port or Crows top does. Why should moving across the world mean we can't follow a game we grew up with.
It appears to me that some people are very quick to say sorry for coming from England, where as people whos grandparents are from Ireland or Scotland are quite happy to say thats where they are from even if they have never been there.
Just because living in Australia is so good does not mean England is a S**T hole or being English is wrong

I cant believe this thread!! So :sign53: what if someone wears their football shirt?? Seems that there is a lot of people out there making assumptions way beyond their intellect!!!
My three year old wears his England Kit and is proud to!! My husband will wear his footie shirt when he feels like it and if my daughter wanted an England shirt she could have one likewise for me to!!
AND we want personal plates, WHY because we can if we want to and it is no business of anyone else!!
We dont drive a Daewoo, although there is nothing wrong with driving one, we drive a GREAT big Patrol, so go on have a go about 4x4's!!
You all sound like a bunch of snobby :sign53: to me!! Sure when you all have on your floral shirts, large sun hats, shorts pulled up and OVER the waist and socks with sandals makes me CRINGE to!!!!
I say get a life and stop slagging off fellow expatters!!!
This site is getting worse and worse!! All anyone seems to do on here is slag everyone else off or MOAN, if you dont like your lives then get off your bloody computers and do something about it!!!!

This thread kinda reminds me of the slating I got when I asked where I could purchase a st george and yorkshire rose car sticker (which I have incidentally now got and are both proudly diplayed in my car rear window!) and ended up being a slating cos i am not getting citizenship
If people want to do things for themselves why would anyone else give them a hard time? maybe there is a secret part of these people who are jealous and so feel the need to comment! :P
antonia.steve - April 2, 2007 06:17 AM (GMT)

There, there. Someone will get your dummy for you in a minute or two. Meanwhile in adult-land....
I was told some time ago by an Aussie that the English can usually be recognised by the simple wearing of a football shirt - it's perceived as a national trait regardless of whether it's a club or a national shirt. Also they think the English have a thing about personal plates on cars as a lot of ex-pats rush out and get one as soon as they can. More Aussies than Brits have them though so I don't know where that one came from.
