Hiya,
I live in neighbouring suburb to Gawler South. Gawler has (IMO) good shops and quite a few private schools (which are proving harder to get a spot in). Houses in Gawler South, with a few exceptions are mostly older houses all set on good size blocks. It's far from being considered "in the sticks" but a drive to the Adelaide CBD will take around 50 mins these days. I do it daily and doesn't bother me, but it puts a lot of peoply off.
Also try looking for Hewett, Evanston Park and Gawler East if you are looking for houses.

Hya Toontown,
Have you looked on Realestateproperty.com
(sorry i dont know how to do that link thing)
If you put in Gawler, pick a house ,then look at the area map, click the satelite button then zoom out, you get an idea of where the area is.
I find it realy useful its just google earth, but you can pan around and nosey about the area. You get to see how near the city you are.
Hope this helps.

yes i think I made the fatal mistake of finding my dream home on realestate.com
It is in South Gawler and I want it now. however, we are only in the thinking about it stages and it also depends on where hubby gets a job too. He is a toolmaker so no idea what area employs them, whether they are dotted about or whether they are in one place.
What is a CBD?
My parents will probably be moving out in the future and they would probably need somewhere that has good local shops, good local transport. We need somewhere that has good schools and good commuting to and from work.
thanks for your replies

hi there,
C B D =central buisnes district.
some houses are lovely arnt they. Im almost as adicted to the site as adbrits!!!
Just remember though if they are cheap , its for a reason. Imean there all cheaper than over here , but if there cheap for the suburb you need to ask why, sometimes when you zoom out you can see why but im told its not always the case.

It wouldn't be the 2 storey job up on The Terrace would it?
http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin/rsear...=o&id=103825317There are some fantastic houses up there with million dollar views. Gawler is full of OAP's, so it would be great for parents etc, but they would need to drive as there is no public transport into shops (taxi would only be a few bucks), and it is a steep walk up to The Terrace.

yes Beaner, thats the one. Its mine so gerroff lol.
mam and dad both drive, but they probably wouldnt live there anyway, where would i be looking for something closeby for them but a bit flatter and closer to transport links? probably within about 3 miles?
So this CBD? is that where all the business are? or are there some out of that region?
Just read the bit about OAPS. dont think the kids would have any playmates then?
Beaner - April 2, 2007 07:46 PM (GMT)
I think when most people refer to the CBD they talk about Adelaide CBD, which is 44km's south. Transport from Gawler to the CBD is good, trains run in and out of the city.
Gawler itself does have a business district, but it's just banks and shops, whereas the Adelaide CBD is all head offices and larger scale shopping. There are lots of area around Gawler that are flat, but there is no public transport to move around it, but it's not that big and most things are within walking distance.
Gawler has industry nearby, in the form of the Barossa Wine Region. Wineries, tourism, and all its support infrastructure, form a major part of work around here.
Don't let the bit about OAP's put you off. Gawler is full of young families, and they go to some great schools, St Brigids, Immanuel, Xavier and Trinity are private, and Gawler East is a great public school. I'm not sure about Gawler High though.
Most people don't look this far north. Is there a reason why you are?

the only reason we were looking at Gawler was that house, and that was the only reason. Before I saw it I was looking at places like greenwith, golden grove, wynn vale etc.
Do you think you will be able to get a house like that in those places?
Beaner - April 2, 2007 08:28 PM (GMT)
The Spring Hill estate at Golden Grove is full of them, but you will need deep pockets. Gawler is a little more affordable because of it's distance out from the CBD.

So, the CBD?
Is this the place where all of the industry places are?
Given my hubby is a toolmaker, could it be likely that we will be looking for work in this area?
So are the prices of houses dearer or cheaper nearer to the CBD?
Beaner - April 2, 2007 08:58 PM (GMT)
No, the CBD is pretty much all white collar and retail. Industrial areas are scattered around the suburbs.
Yes, house prices climb once you get within around 25mins of the CBD.

well I will be looking to work in hospital and he will be looking to work industrial so we dont need to be beside CBD.
