Not sure if I am totally thick or just not looking in the right places!! are you allowed to take over tumble dryers?? I was under the impression that I would be leaving all my large kitchen appliances but after reading the FAQ section I have changed my mind and are taking everything!!! if not usable over there then there is no loss really. so does any one have an idea??? :loopy: :lol2:

lol no, not the cooker

Snappy - August 23, 2004 03:08 PM (GMT)
Yep there is a thread somewhere about washing machines and I'm sure tumble dryers were covered in that as well. You would have to change the plug on it but otherwise I think they were OK. No problems with customs or anything like that.

Vince I'm sure Kay will kick you very very hard one of these days!

Sasha :)

:P Thanx sasha X

HazelG - August 24, 2004 12:07 AM (GMT)
we brought both washing machine & tumble dryer - no probs

Elaine - August 24, 2004 12:43 AM (GMT)
We'd have been lost this last few weeks without our tumble dryer - it rained constantly for weeks on end, or at least on my washday every week!

As said above, just change the plug and it'll work fine.

Elaine

Andy - August 24, 2004 02:17 AM (GMT)
If you have a decent cooker, bring it with you
That's the one regret we had.
We brought our tumble drier.....works fine!

FredG - August 24, 2004 03:22 AM (GMT)
Don't bring the fridge or freezer though.

If they contain CFC's or if you cannot prove they don't contain CFC's you won't get them through customs apparently.

Howard - August 24, 2004 03:54 AM (GMT)
We brought both fridge and freezer and were never asked whether they contained CFC's, what model they were or anything about them. Ours were about 10 years old and were not checked by Customs. B)

Tumble dryers ,ok wash machines ok, fridges leave em , a lot of european fridge motors are smaller and dont work as hard , during high heat periods [45deg c} plus, gas stoves [cookers] , some gas fitters will not fit them , as the say there are differences , with specs , gas knozzles , kilo joules , thermo units , and all the rest so at the risk of burning your house down leave them at home. The last couple i saw that brought a stove with them, ended up converting it to LPG , and used it next to their , BBQ , for doing the WOK or the big SOUP PAN or heating the TUNA MORNAY,...................mm

:thumbs up:
Thanks guys was contemplating taking cooker also but it is a big range and I think it best to sell it with house!! as for fridge/freezer it is a hotpoint and only 3 years old so not sure!! I really like the idea of leaving it just to be able to get the huge american type fridges you have over there!!!

Going along the same lines - how do electrical appliances and furniture etc stack up in Oz in terms of prices? We're kinda thinking that we might buy some new bits here before we go.

Any thoughts?

Elaine - August 24, 2004 01:15 PM (GMT)
I'm sure there is info on this in faq under 'packing/shipping'. Can't look it up right now though as Howard is doing an enormous download (a mere 117 megs) and this thing is running so S L O W L Y it's painful even replying!

Try www.google.com.au to find a website for The Good Guys, or a more general search for electrical shops. Again some of these have been posted in the past but I can't look up where they are now to tell you - worth checking out faq 'living in Adelaide' I think.

Sorry it's only pointers, normally I'd check it out and tell you precisely but that would take all night right now :loopy:

marco121068 - August 24, 2004 01:44 PM (GMT)
Thanks Elaine. I'll take a more detailed look at the areas you mentioned in the FAQ's tonight. 117 MB? That would take me 3 weeks on my dial up connection.

Hi Marco

anything you ship into Oz needs to be over 12 mths old or you'll pay import duty. ;)

So beware of buying super duper up to date stuff and keeping it boxed and unused.

Also a lot of manufacturers guarantees are not covered if you didn't buy it in that country, ie Whirlpool only cover in the country you bought the appliance.

Dyson guarantees are covered worldwide, but Dyson washing machines are only intended for the European market and they do not recommend there usage in Oz.

I would bring your fridge anyway. A lot of aussies have a spare fridge for keeping drinks in during the hot months so even if you don't use it as a main fridge it would come in handy. In fact we have brought our fridge/freezer and are even thinking about getting another fridge as we don't have enough space in this one.

Sally

P.S We didn't get asked anything about CFC when it was shipped either

Hi Jules - thanks for the info. Do customs need you to prove how old anything is - ie receipts etc?

bridiej - August 25, 2004 07:17 AM (GMT)
We thought we would take our fridge freezer, one less thing to buy when you get there and you can always upgrade it to an Oz model once you know what you want...

It's handy to know what you can and can't take though..

jules - August 25, 2004 08:20 AM (GMT)
Hi Marco

you are supposed to list anything under 12 mths old on your shipping list and provide the appropriate receipts.

Obviously if something is very up to date and doesn't look particularly used ie, a brand new top of the range pc, ..........and it is noticed - you will be asked for proof of purchase!

Jules

Hi candice,

Weve got the packers coming next week to but our stuff in storage untill we go. Were taking most kitchen appl except the fridge/freezer we were also told about the cfc's and that if we could not get a guarentee which costs it could be sent back to england and we'd have to pay for it.
We did'nt think it was worth the risk. The packers also told us to fill the washer and dryer drum full of stuff to reduce packing costs.

Hi I've just retrieved this out of the FAQs section for you re fridges, it's under Removals - Fridges, Freezers!

The guidelines for shipping in CFC stuff were changed about March/April I think?

Hi

I've just had PSS shippers here to give me a quote.

He said they haven't had a problem yet, but newer Fridges and freezers should be cfc free.

Have now phoned the manufacturers to ask where their label to this effect is - there's a large GREEN STICKER on the back which reads C - PENTANE! Apparently this means they will be ok!

So, mine are coming - it'll save having to go out and source even more stuff in those first few month.

never had any probs with our fridge or freezer although customs went through loads of our stuff (we must have been unlucky)

garden tools, tents, and numerous other items were opened and inspected but they just ignored the cans of oil and other probably hazzardous material in other cans

shippers did put a couple of unused teabags in both the fridge and freezer because they said it soaked up the mildew and guess what  they were right no mildew at all in either

I really wouldn`t bother with the cooker, I`ve not seen a house yet that hasn`t had a cooker rented or bought

Sheila

most cookers are built in unless its an old house, say 25yrs
