Title: Child Labour
Description: 13 yr olds serving yr burgers!
CatWithClaws - April 22, 2007 05:47 AM (GMT)
Was amazed by this article in the 'Tiser yesterday
http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0...424-910,00.htmlFirstly didn't realise there is no minimum age for working in SA, and secondly, what on earth is the mother thinking of, letting a 13 yr-old work a 4pm till 1am shift ffs??
On the other hand, it does mean my kids can start to earn their keep at last....

Even more interesting is that the employer isn't a small family business or backstreet shyster but in fact a 'well respected', well known, high street, retail outlet.

My daughter started at HJ's at 14, bunch of BOZOS, moved onto to Maccas, loved it, got her own money etc etc, used to do 1 nightshift a month on a Friday 12 to 630.

a night shift as a teen....
Please say this is a joke!

Hannah started work here at foodland as a checkout 'chick'...(yes they are called that!)....she was 15 1/2.....but think they take them on when they are 15...but not quite sure?
It has done her the world of good.....she has earned in the region of $130-$250 a week depending on what shifts she does....the higher range was when she was working 20/25 hours part-time after she left school.
Now she is at TAFE, she works saturday & sunday and earns around $130.
UM....not too sure if i'd be happy with her working very late/night shifts though...although knowing her like i do.....she wouldn't anyway!
But i don't have a problem with kids as young as 13 working a few hours....think its good for them to start earning their own money etc.....

..... which is why my daughter still doesn't have a regular job... I've spent hours on the phone with potential employers trying to negotiate on hours - no luck! She recently thought she'd found her dream job at a chocolate shop only to be told that the owner would not consider less than 20 hours a week. This has been the case everywhere she has applied. A lot of the fast-food places are really disgraceful, HJ's is not the only one. They take on the youngest staff they can because of the cheap labour, then make them work longer and longer hours each week, including late nights or night shifts and then tell them they can leave if they don't like it :( -
Research has shown time and time again that school work suffers when teenagers work more then 10 hours a week. Goodness knows how working through the night must affect not only their school work but also their health...
Not Happy John!

well, if you want my opinion....I have no issue with working nights, I have done it for years. I tried days, but just felt fried at the end of the shift

I would (as an adult) if i had to,and i am sure i would get used to it. However i would not allow my teen to do so.... thats my point.
