Title: Carrick Hill

We spent a lovely day here....

www.carrickhill.sa.gov.au

Its in Springfield (Doh! :D ) which is near Mitcham and is just off the Fullerton Road south of the city

A little piece of the UK, a beautiful 17th Century manor built in the 1930's. There is an entrance fee for the house, which we didn't do, but entrance to the grounds and gardens is FREE!! We only looked round the gardens, didn't really have a chance to explore further, but I think there are walks around the 'estate'.

Set on the side of the hill so you get views across to the sea. They have a little cafe and we sat on the terrace overlooking the rose garden under the shade of an oak tree. Lovely place to spend Mother's Day.

They have a literary trail for children so they run off to find Ratty's boat, Charlottes Web etc - just watch out though, there are two ponds. The kids loved finding all the different references to books, you can download the details from the above web site. Picnics were set up everywhere, people were def there for the day. During school holidays they have special events like Alice In Wonderland and there are characters roaming around the grounds. Think you have to book for those ocassions.

I think its going to become a regular outing for us. Very bizarre though, English manor house with Aussie hills in the background :)

I had to give a guided tour around there last semester - :sign68: - got a HD ;)

Did you know that the house was designed around the wooden interior, which the Haywards (who owned John Martins department store - now closed) bought on their honeymoon in the UK - it came from a manor house in Staffordshire 'Beaudesert'. The grounds of which interestingly are now a Girl Guide and Scout camp - where my son did his last cub camp in the UK!

Sorry being boring - it is great to go - you would have no idea it was there. The grounds are free, but there is a minimal charge to go in the house. They do weddings too - great spot for it.

Not sure about the medieval festival but they do host the French Festival every year.

We loved our visit there - it was an olive and olive oil festival.

It is a lovely place and worth having a peek around the inside of the house.
Apparently most of the interior was shipped down from salvaged parts of UK stately homes in the 1930's.

Must visit again soon.I do miss the history of the the olf UK stately homes.

I was bored at work and ended up just visiting some of my less visited places on AB, but if this is really your thing, you might also like Martindale Hall.
