Have they given you the number. We stayed at no 15 and it was basic but great for the money ($162 p/w). We also know someone who stopped in no 23 who said the same as us. So long as you don't go expecting a palace then it's definately OK for a few weeks.
I have got photos of no 15. If you want me to send them or you need any more info, let me know.

Its not an area that id buy a house, pesonally speaking, and its general perception is not high on the list of many.
However, as a short term measure , it may be suitable....,depends what suits, I guess...................I believe someone on here stayed down there in OAA...........it might have been SHORTY..........but Im not sure!.
Aha..it was Shorty!!!!!!!!!!!!!Beat me too it.

At least everywhere else you look at living will be a step up. ;)

Ooooops............I'd make sure the locks are strong.

we stayed at no. 23 for about 4 weeks. Bit of a shock when we first arrived as accomodation is basic. Not an area we'd choose to live in permanently. Dennis and Irene a few doors up, who i think now do meet and greet, were very friendly.

There are a couple of photos of Justin Crescent on the Shutterfly site - look for an album called OAA.
Didn't someone on here stay there around a year or so ago and was burgled?

Just goes to show, you must do your homework about the areas you choose to buy or rent doesnt it?
Im expecting basic accommodation oaa if we are lucky enough to get it.
The house , street , and view look fine to me , as most , i expect .
The fact that its been burgled is a bit worrying , but that can happen anywhere.
I would have thought the thieves would get richer pickings in the better areas anyway. Unless they are targeting migrants , thinking they would leave valuables laying around??
Bev :D

they won't be breaking in for your wordly goods, most will either have been sold here in blighty or be in a shipping container at sea!
Cheers

One of the first things migrants do is go out and buy new tvs, dvds and computers.
Then every now and again post on here when and where they are going to be living........

This issue has cropped up before and although there is a danger I have yet to hear of anyone from this site who has had their new electical goods removed in this manner.
I agree with Andy though (first time for everything I guess) that newbies tend to go out and buy new electrical stuff. Probably not best to do so whilst you're in OAA. When we were in our OAA we left our valuables with a friend as the lock on our front door looked like it had been forced at some stage.
All is not doom and gloom though - I've got a spare 21" TV that any new migrant can borrow for a few weeks. Australian, not UK ;)

When you open a bank account in Adelaide are there facilities for storing valuables , safety deposit boxes?
It would be piece of mind till your settled in your own home and have your own hidey holes !!
All our worldly goods would be in a container as kangomik says but what about jewellery, rings and those types of bits n pieces , do you send them in it, or take them on the plane with you???
Mr T or liberace are SO not a good look !!
Thats also a good point that Andy made about broadcasting your purchases.
Bev :D

I brought my jewellery with me - but was unable to get it insured without a valuation, and was unable to get a valuation done at the short notice I had by then left myself. Just another thing to consider before you travel...

Its a shame about theft / burglary - I actually think the OAA piccies look 'fine'.
Good luck Lee, you don't have to stay there to long if you don't like it, think of it as a 'base.
Angela :)

I think the comments have put us off we are going to give it up i don't want the kids to think Australia is as bad as portrayed on this thread so we will look elswhere.

Hi Lee
Christie Downs is not the most upper class suburb and yes I am sure a lot of people wouldn't choose to live there. But at the end of the day people do live there and it is not like down town London.
If you keep your OAA accommodation you can always look around for something else pretty quickly. Things on the property market for renting or selling do move quite fast here. There are a couple of caravan parks that I am sure you could move straight into if you really hated it in Christie Downs.
Short-term rental accommodation can be extremely expensive when you first arrive and you still aren't guaranteed it will be in a good area.
I know people are just trying to be honest which is great but don't be completely put off and don't forget in those first few weeks you will hardly be home anyway!
Just my thoughts!
Emma

We had a couple of friends who had OAA in Christie Downs.....had no dramas.
Cheap base to start from....just take sensible precautions......

On the upside the beaches are beautiful, trains straight into city, and Collanades is an excellent shopping centre, Port Noarlunga is very nice, Its no rougher than any town in England in my opinion, ( I worked down there as a social worker) a lot of it is prejudice due to a lot of housing trust places, youll be fine!

When we came you could chose the suburb you prefered to stay in.
We asked for Gleneg or Brighton, and got put in Oaklands Park.
This was very basic, very brown and very seventies with token shag pile brown and cream carpets.
My first impression was OMG what have we done.
I think this is the best way by far. I got the carpets cleaned and went mad with the bleach. Once you know its clean, its easy to live anywhere especially when you know its only for a few weeks.
We only paid $110 a week, this was fab considering rents where we wanted to live (Glenelg or Brighton) were about $350 - $400 a week.
We honestly spent the first eight weeks traveling around everywhere to sus the place out, so your never in anyway.
vaalie - May 22, 2007 02:16 AM (GMT)
I sow no 15 when shorty was in there - its was basic but clean.
I would have taken it had we got it. Its a base, it will give you time to find your feet. I would say be careful of rushing into a private rental if you don't know the areas.

You'd be mad to give it up.......OK..its not the best area...but not everyone who lives down there is bad...
You may only be there a really short time....and it will save you a fortune!...
Your kids are old enough to understand that its only a temp thing....we didn't get OAA....you only need it for a base...you will be far too busy..out all day...your kids will soon see what australia is all about.
we paid around $700 a week to stay at brighton caravan park...but it was good though...as we were right on the beach and the kids loved it..

Did i miss something!!!!!!!!!!! when was it burgled...every week or just the once?
Wherever you are staying someone somewhere doesnt like it. its only till you get settled, its cheap, basic but close to all the amenities.Give it a go.when we landed at modbury people were oh my thats too far north, but its only short term and will save you a fortune.
Tracy :bouncy:

Totally agree with the last comments. You'd be mad not to take it.
Granted - it's not going to be the Ritz, but it'll be a roof over your head for not many $$'s.
Take sensible precautions, take out insurance as soon as practicable (we took ours out the day we moved into our OAA) and use it as a base. We weren't overjoyed when we saw ours...but stayed the full 12 weeks! At $144 a week (inc bills) it was stupid not to.

I heard no 23 or 25 was burgled a couple of months after we had left no 15.
But they had left a window open!!
