Hiya
Now we are on a serious move, what is Hallet Cove really like? warts and All!
This is the suburb I have narrowed down (I would like Glenelg but seems to expensive), Does it have pubs, shops, parks, well located schools, easy drive to city, how long to the city, friendly neighbours???!!!!
Any info would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Andrea

I like Hallet Cove. It has all the things your asking about although i don't know about the friendly neighbours. ;)
I would have moved there but the wife wanted a sandy beach for the little ones.

Hi Andrea,
I have veered toward Hallet Cove too, I have looked in FAQ as you probably have, but it doesn't really give you the nitty gritty on the areas you mentioned (well pubs come to mind! )
So I would appreciate any information from the people who live there, hopefully it won't cause any fights, everyone is entitled to there own views :D

Um...not so old oil refinery..
according to the messenger last week...it could one day become a working oil refinery once more....the company who own it have apparantly agreed in principle that it could be a suitable site for a desalination plant...but won't let them touch the existing refinery so it can be used again in the future if required...
Of course this is written in a newspaper...

According to the Australians I know, it's the Elizabeth of the (not too distant) future :-)
Only an opinion of course, and I know some very nice people who come from Elizabeth....

The beach is beautiful, there is sand on it, but there are rocks and stones, so swimming wouldnt be too easy,I have seen people swim. It is more of a walk along beach. The stones on the beach are very pretty. It is a conservation area due to the fact it was part of a glacier and it was where Antartica was attached some 650 million yrs ago. So it makes an interesting walk.
There is a shopping mall, that IMO is very run down...although it is being rebuilt at the moment. It has foodland at the moment and will have Woolworths (food store), along with lots of other shops, there is also a pub there, which IMO isnt that great, what that will be like when the mall is done up , i dont know. I prefer to go to the Vic on south rd that is about a 5 min drive.
There are 2 primary schools here plus the R-12 school. My two dont go to these, but I have heard they are all good!
There are reserves all over Hallett Cove, so I dont think you will be far from a park at all!
You might be able to see the oil refinnery from parts of Hallett cove. Which I have on good authority it will never be an oil refinnery again. They are looking at others uses at the moment, desalinization is one of them. And it is , I'm sure in O'Sullivans Beach. Cant check as the UBD is in the car with Limski!
There is a train line here, so 25 mins to the city by train and about the same by car depending what time you go.

We have been living in Hallett Cove for about 1 month now and it was probably the last on my list before we came over.
I love it here - it has character with hills (lots of them) and sea views from every junction rather than the flatness of the areas closer to the city. You will find parrotts in the park whilst walking to school and at the moment everything is lush and green (clearly that won't be the case in the Summer). The shopping Mall has everything you need on a day to day basis - it is very scruffy and does have some youngsters hanging out in the evenings beacuse they play some taped musak outside. However, I have never felt in the slightest intimidated by them -they are JUSt hanging out.
You can take a lovely walk along the cove beach (just stones mainly and dog-walking) the kids love it as it has a playground overlooking it. You are a 10 min drive to lovely beaches for swimming and people are friendly.
The schools are fine (so far) although there are private options a short drive away and there seems to be houses available for most budgets (although prices are rising)
All in all, have alook and see what you think - we drove around so many suburbds when we arrived with 2 small children in tow which wasn't much fun. We did make a snap decision and who is to say there wern't better places out there - this just suited us now and we are happy with our choice.
Good luck - do look around and consider everywhere even if you hadn't liked the sound of it before you came and keep an open mind :D

You've narrowed down your search to HC (and Glenelg) but don't know if it has pubs, shops, parks, well located schools, or how long it takes to get to the city?
Might I ask what criteria you used to narrow it down?

I loved living in hallett Cove for the 13 months we were there. Close to Karara shops, hot chicken shop and deli.
Kids walked to school most of the time and the beach was so nice. Walked it every morning with my dog. So nice to have a dog friendly beach where everyone clened up after their dog!!!! Plus when i went down there at 8.30 each morning there was hardly anyone else there.......
Shopping centre is being rebuilt with loads more great shops, will be lovely when done. Local pub is fine, acually better than fine inside but lacks atmosphere. Lunch and dinner menu is great, excellent chief.
Of all the time we spent in south australia i have never come across a better suburb that i would want to live in!!

I too have only lived here in Hallett Cove for 2 months now and I think its a great location. Its a very convenient place to live (train line, shops, good schools) and the amount of poms that move into this area can only show you that it ticks most boxes.
We were fortunate to find a house just off cove road so we have fantastic sea views, that in itself is worth the location (for us anyway). Most house prices round here are from $280,000 upwards depending on what you are looking for.
My opinion is that you can't go far wrong by living here. Others may differ, but each to there own, I'm sure many places in Adelaide have there + and -.

My 2 kids go to hallett cove east and have settled in great there. We have found it to be a fantastic school with lots of great activities and sports for them!
The shops are going to be better once completed and it is only a 10 minute drive to marion and the newly developed colonades out at Noarlunga so you have everything you could need!

I can't comment on living in Hallet Cove as I live in Flagstaff Hill, but I can tell you there are some lovely, friendly people who live there

The older part is very well cared for with extemely well kept gardens. The newer part still looks spartan and characterless. Views can be pretty impressive of the coast. Very Windy at times. Very hilly (bit of a bummer but helps with the said views) Beach is quite small, wild and dramatic with lots of striped stones and rocks (I will post a picture when I get on our 'big' computer tonight) Kids used to love exploring the rocks.Hard to walk along beach without looking down, pushchair use pretty impossible also. Toilets in the carpark are closed, carpark and building in it is run down. Alot of the housing is all very pleasant but kind of 'samey'.... similar age, similar design. You wouldn't really walk anywhere, always using the car (unless you were right on top of the shops) If your trade is based around industrial areas you will have around a one hour commute to the predominant areas in the north.
We considered Hallett Cove but prefered the feel of an older more established suburb, ending up in Seaview Downs. It's all very subjective and you will never know until you see an area 'in the flesh' and in context to it's surroundings.
To conclude: Very nice but nothing there. :ph43r:

The old surfclub which is in the carpark at Hallett Cove Beach is soon going to be refurbished as a Cafe the council are just giving their final approval. I don't know if anyone has been into the Estate Agents at Karrera but they have some great old photos of Hallett cove up on their walls.

Lived in HC for 15 months
Guess it depends on which part you live in...............
Our street:
Can't see the oil refinery
loads of different nationality's - all lovely people
Not generally windy
lots of trees
not flat
houses are all very different to each other
lots of walks very close by
pub - ok with the right company (it is lacking in atmosphere but with the right friends its great cause then we can walk home!!!!!)
No complaints with the R12
lorluc - May 31, 2007 12:24 AM (GMT)
We rented in hallett cove for 8 months....november 2005-June 2006....
It wasn't where we really wanted to be, but a decent rental came up and we took it...
2 of my children attended Hallett Cove East Primary...and i can highly recommend the school...i do have one criticism thought regarding my 7 year old. They insisted that he should remain on very easy reading books when it was very clear he was much further advanced.and also a very bright kid...at his new school (reynella east)..they recognised this straight away and acted on it..
As for the R-12?.....My eldest child attended this school for a while and i wasn't that impressed. When she started there, they offered her a wide scope of subject choices...she picked the ones she wanted to do, only to find out when she went back after the summer break that they had pulled the plug on alot of these subjects...leaving her completely lost. Also at the time, she knew of students who were also pulled out of the school and transfered to others so they could do the subjects of their choice...
Now i live in happy valley...and my kids attend reynella east school...i am finding the opportunities they have there are more, and i am very happy they will be continuing their education there...through the high school....my eldest also had much more choice when she attended reynella east high school.
Remember...this is just our personal experience...
As for the suburb itself.....nice place....yes the shopping centre is rather run down but that is changing...
the beach is great for walking the dog etc...and the play area next to the beach is good...my kids love it!
For those of you with young kids...would really recommend the daycare centre over there...superb place....lovely people...Janice who runs it is great!
Our neighbours were australian and serbian......friendly...did ask me though what the fascination is with hallett cove and the brits?....said i really didn't know...they did feel there is a 'brit invasion' happening in hallett cove.....on the whole i don't think they mind...although Hannah has had some anti-pom abuse from customers whilst working in foodland over there....quite unpleasant...so some aren't too happy!
I really believe that you can't decide on a suburb till you get here....we had read on here so much about hallett cove before we came out...and yes...first place we headed too....and decided against it...it really wasn't for us..
But circumstances meant we ended up there...due to finding it hard to get a decent rental....our time was running out at the caravan park!..
Been living in happy valley now for a year....and definitely was the right decision to move...

I don't buy frozen chips any more we get them from the chicken shop at the Karrara shops!! Yummy!. :happy25: HC is a very large suburb and my sons best friend, who also lives in HC is a 7 min drive away or 3/4 hr walk. Both boys are happy with their school, 1 at the R-12, the other at the East. Hard to cycle anywhere cus of the hills, unless you're fit, obviously I'm not!! Hard to walk to places cus it's all so spread out and takes ages, although a lovely area to just go out walking. Gardens are small compared to the uk. Some houses are massive with tiny back yards. Look before you leap. All the best. Jan :D

Not sure about it being the new Elizabeth, but they do call it "Little Britain"...... not because of the wacky characters but merely the number of brits....

HC is cheaper than other places with similar sized properties....must be a reason :chuckle:
Probably the fact that it is in the south (read my N v S post.....).
I suppose the old Adelaide train line is better than the 100% reliable o-bahn :D
Please take my posts re suburbs as humorous with some underlying facts in amongst the jokes. I have nothing against any place that is not NE :D

On the front of the southern suburbs messenger... "Little Britain".

Why would that be,? Prehaps because Elizabeth was settled by "10 pound poms"so what they are saying, is that Hallet Cove will eventually have the same warmth & character that Elizabeth has today. .................... ;) mm

Why Hallett Cove or Glenelg ? there's quite a few suburbs inbetween. Some a lot more affordable than Glenelg and not up t'hill like HC.

HC is has everything you're likely to need, close to the city/shops/good schools/beaches. It has some very hilly bits which means strong calf muscles and great views depending on your perspective. It has a beach (not a long sandy one though) and has a boardwalk along the cliffs / national park there (and is close to the other great beaches of the south :D like Glenelg, Brighton, Christies, Moana...). Long and the short of it - you can see why many people love it.
Regarding the refinery - it's really only the red and white striped stack that's visible (and not from everywhere). The jury is out on if it'll stay as a refinery or not or some other furure use (but probably not the desal plant that the papers would make you think though... <_< ). Who knows - they might have built Hallet Rise there in 10 years time. :P
Not wishing to sound like a worn out record, you really need to see it for yourself to tell if it's you or not - until then put it into the "possibles" pile :)

So did i ;) .............unless you have lived their dont try to under stand it,......it has a couple of bad areas, but in general never had any trouble in the 40 plus years i have been here,,, can think of a lot worse areas in Adelaide........ ;) mm
CatWithClaws - June 4, 2007 08:29 AM (GMT)
Personally I'd pick somewhere around Elizabeth over Hallett Cove any day - again only an opinion and everyone is entitled to their own - as I think job opportunities within easy reach are far better there, some of the areas have great views, transport links are good, there are some large plots, and as I say, I know a lot of nice people who come from there.
I was only passing on what has been said to me by 'died in the wool' aussies - I guess the thinking being Elizabeth was where all the Brits headed for 40-odd years ago, and Hallett Cove is where the majority seem to head for now (for some reason) - hence the 'Elizabeth of the Future'
I bet the aussies living in Hallett Cove think all their Christmasses have come at once, not only having the value of their houses shooting up with all the cash-rich Brits heading there, but having all those lovely British people as their new neighbours. :-)

I had an interesting conversation today with an australian guy who bought in hallet cove 14 years ago...and still lives there.
He said that 14 years ago , hallett cove was very run down...really quite rough..
He said he can't believe the amount of Brits that now live in hallett cove.....i said (very tongue in cheek)'that must be why the area has improved".... :lol2: :lol2:....he also pointed out that at the local pub they would always have AFL on....now they show mainly soccer!..which he believes is a sure sign that the brits are here........i did point out its called football......

The Australians just don't get 'tongue in cheek', it's all taken very literally! I wonder what he thought :o
Gary & Rach - June 8, 2007 06:18 PM (GMT)
An Aussie i know living in hallet cove, (yes probably the last one), has the local real estate people on the phone at least once a week. Apparently there Are more cashed up brits than properties available in Hallett cove. As for comparisomes with Elizabeth. Just remember they are actually Aussies now up there. All citizens, and there kids never knowing any different. Hallett cove IS little Britain And represents most of the things we've all worked so hard to get away from.
Just remember all the things you all said about the immigrants in britain, legal and otherwise grouping together and bringing down the tone of an area.
Ill get slaugthered for this and this deleted by the mods. But you guys are no different to the pakistanies and indians in england.
Delboy - June 8, 2007 07:40 PM (GMT)
Hi Gary, hows tricks.
I think the Australian sun has got to your head mate.
I could go into the differences between English in Australia,, and Pakistanis / Indians in England but I would have to mod myself :ph43r:
One difference that shouldn't be too controversial is we can all speak English.
I'll keep the rest to myself. :P
