Title: Furniture shops
PaulDClark - August 29, 2004 11:00 AM (GMT)
Hi all,
We finally arrived on Saturday and are heavily jetlagged and gradually recovering, which is just as well considering how much we have got to do...
A quick question for you all, where do you recommend buying furniture from, we had a look at Le Corneau which seems OK, although they suffer from the typical 12 week delivery times?
Cheers

Well done Paul and co on making it here!
Can't help you with furniture - haven't bought any here. Definitely haggle though, wherever you go.
you could try yellowpages.com.au for furniture retailers.

steer clear of le cornu unless you dont mind being lied to and waiting forever for your stuff...we were told our bed was being delivered within a week when in fact it was still on a conatainer ship in the south pacific!!
Harvey Normans are good...or if you liek Ikea type furniture try Freedom

Paul, are you furnishing the whole house, or just after a few bits to tide you over till your container arrives?
wizzywozza - August 29, 2004 10:14 PM (GMT)
For beds and bedroom furniture I recommend Bedroom Showcase.
And there is a marvellous furniture shop on South Road at Clovelly Park called Bernard and Kerryn Browns (I think).
I have always found Harvey Norman and Freedom very overpriced. My best mate has just had a terrible experience with HK's regarding delivery, broken items, damage to her house, and late night harrassing phone calls from the saleman who got her mobile number from the confidential customer information on their computer system.

Paul!
many years ago I shared a house with a mate and we pretty well got all our furniture from house auctions that are advertised in the local Adelaide "Advertiser" if you don't mind older style furniture. It's a cheap way to go before your stuff arrives from the UK.
Mattresses can be bought from the factory at SleepHaven along South Road in Edwardstown, I think.
If you're travelling up in the Adelaide Hills, try looking at the furniture shop near the "Steam Ranger" at the railway station in Mount Barker . . . all new furniture at reasonable prices. Ask anyone where the "Steam Ranger " is and they'll put you right.
Hope this helps, mate!

Thanks All,
We are looking for:
Adult Bedroom Set - Bed, Tables & Dresser
Kids Beds * 2 (High Sleeper Type)
Sofas - Leather 3 Seater + 2 Seater
Dining Room Set
Big TV
Possibly a sofabed depending upon the house size we get.
The rest of our stuff arrives at the back end of October, we basically decided not to take a fair amount of stuff, as our bedroom at home is built in, and the kids stuff was shot to hell! House in the UK is safley rented out and will stay that way until we decide whether to stay in Aus or not in about 2007.
Cheers
Paul

Paul..for a TV go to Good Guys...if you are not getting it on credit you can haggle the price down a fair bit.

anything electrical, I've found Truscott's in Franklin Street near the GPO to be great on prices.
One factor you may like to consider, is with TV's, Australia is going "digital" from Jan 1st 2008, so if you're sticking around in Australia and you buy a current analogue set on 50 Mhz, it won't pick up a cracker after midnight Dec 31st 2007, unless you get a decoder for it.
The analogue sets are very low priced as a result of only having a short braodcast life in Australia nowadays.
You won't be able to sell it for much if you decide to leave Australia in 2007.

Welcome to Adelaide!
I'll recommend Bernard and Keryn Browns also. We've bought furniture from them and they are very good.
Don't forget to ask for discount - especially if you are buying a fair bit.
Good luck

Paul, we brought the kids high sleeper type beds with us and my daughter's was a real problem in the hottest weather. It's the highest type, she can only just sit up without hitting the ceiling, and it was so much hotter up there than down at floor level that in the summer she quite often had to come down and sleep on the floor!
Just another thing you might not have thought of, as if you didn't have enough on your list already

Welcome to Adelaide. For telly's I recommend Truscott's, for leather suites you might like to try Johns Leather Warehouse in Manton St, Hindmarsh (near the Entertainment Centre) as they usually have plenty of stocks and are reasonably priced. Saying that, we bought ours from Casual Living on Anzac Highway, we managed to haggle them down by $500 and free delivery (from over $4,000) but we did have to wait 12 weeks. Check out Dreamland or Captain Snooze (they each have more than one shop) for bedroom suites. I love Harvey Norman but find them quite expensive. And as everyone says, remember to haggle!
cheers, adelaidegirl

Thanks all,
Going to view the one and only suitable property in the South today, the whole rental market is totally dead at the moment, my shortlist of 3 went to one over the space of a weekend. Bummer

Don`t bother with Lecornu, unless you can see it and take it with you, we ordered a leather lounge suite, when it came the one chair was bigger than the other, we had a bugger of a game getting our money back we waited 14wks for it and they wanted us to wait another 10wks for a replacement and they only wanted to replace the one chair, we said bugger that, it could have been a different colour. We went to Johns Warehouse got a good deal , but still had to wait 10wks.
Harvey Norman got us a 2 and 1/2 seater leather sofa in 6wks with no problems, and we found the service very good.
David Jones and Myer may seem expensive but they will match anyones price, and you always know that if anything goes wrong there won`t be a problem, they like to keep the customer happy.
So don`t forget if you would really like an item from a store of your choice but its cheaper somewhere else ask if thet will price, any good store will, they want your custom
We got a washing machine from David Jones and it was $200 cheaper than any where else

And guys I still have a double bed for sale its in perfect condition with a headboard for $300 ONO, I wouldn`t sell it wasn`t good its only been used for 6wks

Good luck in your new life.
Looking forward to hearing of your experiences - good and bad.
Been reading all of the furniture posts, and taking notes for when we arrive!
