Title: Citizenship

Delboy - June 8, 2007 08:29 PM (GMT)
Just an update you you peeps :)

We had our interview on Wednesday this week.
it was all very painless and friendly.
If you learn the responsibilities and privileges you should be just fine.
we was not asked to list the Rights of all Australian Citizens.

Just a bit more info....
we applied for our interview in January and was told there is a 5 month waiting list, so couldn't get in till June.
2 weeks before our interview date we got a letter telling us about the best ways to apply :loopy: they said the best thing to do was come up to the office, take a ticket and wait (maybe a hour) ,, Thanks very much, we have just waited 5 months

Anyway, when we got there for our booked in appointment, the lady behind the desk told us we were the first ones to turn up today for their interview.
I thought that was very strange.

There is more info in the FAQ section and the link that Jet posted is accurate minus the Rights.

There are some changes in the wind so I don't know how long this thread will be valid but hope it helps some of you. ;)

I remember the interview well. The interviewer did give us quite a few prompts ;)

Our timing fell well and we did the ceremony on Australia Day :D

We lodged our application online on Wednesday https://www.ecom.immi.gov.au/citz/html/b124/index.html
Took the money instantly $120.00 each for me and the wife, kids go free :D
So we will wait and see what happens next.

I'm eligible at the end of next month so I'll go straight to the office as I've waited 5 years to get mine.

As for the link and that person Sue who says you have to learn the song Advance Australia Fair off by heart - she's having you on - you don't need to know this at all!

:P

We had a letter today from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
It basically said we have to go for an interview. We can go to the office at any time conveinient to ourselves, get a ticket and wait in a queue. Maximum waiting time is roughly an hour. Office hours 9am - 4pm, except wednesdays when they shut at 1pm.

You can call 131 880 to arrange an appointment for an interview, there is currently a waiting list of several months for an interview time.

DIAC strongly recommend Option 1 for faster application processing.

You need to take the following original documents.

endorced photograph for the proof of identity section.
Your birth certificate (if under 18 a full birth certificate.
Passport and travel document with which you arrived in Australia and all other passports.
Evidence of permanent residence
You must learn and understand your full responsibilities and priviledges of becoming a citizen.
For Children
Childs passport which shows evidence of permanent residence
full birth certificate showing details of parents
there is a bit about court orders and adoption overseas (if necessary)

Applying on the basis of being a spouse of an Australian
Evidence of your spouces citizenship ( full birth cert)
Marriage certificate.

Responsibilities - An Australian Citizen is required to:-
Obey the laws and fulfil your duties as an Australian Citizen
Enrol on the electrol roll and vote at Federal, State & Territory elections and referendums
Serve on a Jury if called
Subject to the rights & exemptions allowed by law, defend Australia, should the need arise.

Priviledges.
The right to apply for appointment to any public office or to stand for election as a member of Parliment
The right to enlist in defence forces and for Government jobs if Citizenship is required.
The right to vote and elect Governments
The right to apply for Australian passports and to enter Australia without a residents return visa
The right to seek assistance from Australian diplomatic reps while overseas.
The right to register any child under 25, born to you overseas, as an Australian citizen by descent.

So thats it, you don't have to take the kids to the interview with you if they are under 16.

Does anyone know if the above statement would encompass making Robs son by his first marriage a citizen by descent despite the fact that he doesn't (yet) reside in Australia. He is 13 and he has Robs surname. I suspect it's not allowed but it's worth a shot if anyone knows better.

Jan

it does ask for in the children section, child's passport showing evidence of permanent residency. Also The relevent court order if you have been granted custody and/or guardianship of the child.

If you have any further inquiries in relation to citizenship, refer to the website, www.citizenship.gov.au

To be honest I don't see why not. If Robs a citizen then surely his son can be a citizen by descent. It says the right to register a child under 25. If he's only 13 that should cover it.

I'll ask when we go.

I can't see this being the case.

I have 2 children under 25 in the UK and they could apply for PR as they would have enough points independantly, however, this would be a lot easier
Info would be appreciated :D

Looks like you have to be an Australian Citizen at the time of birth.
