Could anybody help me to clarify what school year my children will be in when we come to Oz?

Our daughter is 10 - she will be 11 in August- and in the UK she is in year 6. Our son is 7 - he will be 8 in September - and is currently in year 2.

I have read on another site that he will stay the same and she will go back a year or that he will go up a year and she will stay the same????? :what?:

I'm totally confused and am hoping that one of you good people on here will be able to clear things up a little for me.

I reckon that your son would stay the same and your daughter would go back a year.

can't really explain how I worked it out as I have a hangover from the girls night out. When I feel better I'll come back to you.

My kids are 10 (July birthday) and 12 (August birthday). They have both been 'moved up a year' in Oz terms, ie they are in the same year they would have been in in the UK but are with kids a year older than them - just started years 6 and 8.

UK kids start school a year earlier than Oz kids and you will find the schools are very flexible about putting kids in the year that suits them even if they are a different age from the rest of the class.

You will really need to speak to individual schools, and make sure you bring some samples of recent work. They were going to put my son in year 5 and see how he went, but moved him up to year 6 within 2 hours on the first morning!

Erm, i will ask Kate to answer this one. I think you will be in the same year, but they go up to High School a year later, so this would be your first year at High School.

I can never remember what year the kids are in, it was much easier in my day, we only went from 1-4 at juniours and 1 - 5 at High School, then 6th 7 7th if you stayed on. :lol: ;)
