Hi

On our reckie last April we drove through Semaphore and stopped for lunch. From what we saw it is a pretty little area with a shopping street and a good beach. The day we were there it was very quiet but I don't know if that is the norm. I said to my husband that I could live there!

Maybe other Adbritters know better?

Been to Semaphore a few times. Seems a nice seaside town, It has a high street, with mostly speciality shops. It's always been fairly quiet when we've been (not the hustle and bustle of places like Glenelg). It has a little steam train that runs along the sea front and is popular with the paragliders, that surf on the sea (not sure what ther sportis actually called). Hope someone who knows it better can give you more info.

Nice place - reasonably quiet, but does get busy in summer. Few things on the esplanade for the kids to do. They have an annual kite festival and a bit of a fair.
Seem to have a few places for rent, fairly reasonably priced, looks dearer than a lot of places to buy a house though. Depends on how close to the beach you want to be :chuckle:
Watch your feet in summer on the sand dunes - they get pretty hot!!!!

Hi Semaphore is an up and coming area property wise due to the investment further up the coast in Port adelaide. There are still some fab old houses available at reasonable prices (ie, cheaper than down the coast in areas such as Henley and west Beach ) However Semaphore was once deemed by locals a "rough" area and still holds on to some of its reputation .
I have a good friend who lives on the Esplanade and she has a lot of trouble with vandalism to her property and her car and grafitti on her boundary walls . We have viewed several properties in Semaphore , lured by the type of house and proximity to the beach available for less than where we currently live , however each time we have been put off by some of the surrounding properties (burnt out car in yard next door !) and simply by the people out and about in the area.
I would say that it is a good seaside base to rent whilst you get established, but would advise anyone to check it out themselves before considering buying there.

Semaphore is very nice, but I have heard from Patients that live in the area, that they do get snakes. If you like the little blyters your fine

Yes, they do get snakes - the only Brown Snake I've seen since we've been here was in the sand alongside the path going onto Semaphore Beach. Wasn't bothered by the people walking within feet of it either!!

I like Semaphore beach - have never seen it particularly crowded and the only downside is we got told off for having our puppy off the lead there one evening - the wardens sit in the carparks and nab you if they catch you.

Handy location I'd have thought to live in though, with the Grand Junction Road giving quick(ish) access to the whole of the Northern suburbs with lots of employment, and the 'developing' port of Port Adelaide. Definitely worth checking out if it ticks your boxes.

I really like Semaphore. It's only 10 minutes from where we are and the kids love the parks along the foreshore. There's some good shops down Semaphore Road - a sweet shop which sells english sweets/crisps, icecream parlour, old fashioned picture house etc. (There's a good playgroup on Semaphore Road as well)

There's a nice mix of people there (not over-run by Poms - not a dig by the way), it's relatively quiet - in the summer it gets busier but there's always plenty of things happening like fairs/festivals etc - like the other posters have mentioned. It's quite flat and it is very popular with the cyclists as there's a cycle path which runs from Semaphore to North Haven.

Further down the coastline there's Largs and North Haven which are worth considering also.

Good luck

We love Semaphore, always walk the dog on the beach at weekends even though it is 1/2 hour away from where we live. The beach and esplanade are really nice, and from what I've seen of the house prices, it seems to be good value compared with other seaside suburbs. Yes there are a few ferals (pikies in English!) but you get a few just about everywhere in Adelaide unless you live a few select eastern suburbs which your'e average Joe would not be able to afford.
You could easily compare Semaphore to a few English seaside towns as some of the buildings and property are relatively old (first house ever built in Adelaide was in Semaphore), but the more we see of it the more we like it and would have definately considered living there if the right house was available when we emigrated 18 months ago. As mentioned in previous posts, it would be a great place to find a rental, but unfortunately they are like gold dust at the moment.

PS Never realised there was a dog wardon patrolling the car park. We only let the dog off the lead when the beach is empty, which is nearly always!

Haven't seen any burnt out cars, snakes (yet) or any more grafitti than anywhere else! It is quiet (but we're told it gets busy in summer, especially on warm evenings when the whole of Adelaide comes to the coast to cool off!).

Semaphore Road is quieter than expected but is a quirky little street that feels quite homely already. We're renting now but are very tempted to buy in the area in the next year.

We love the Semaphore Palais, and have just discovered Cafe Froot on Semaphore Road for breakfast. Some great independent shops - a butchers, fruit and veg shops, a couple of bakeries - enough to not have to go anywhere else if you choose! We're new here though so lots to still discover!

Just don't tell too many people about it! It's nice as it is!

Spent a while in West Beach and regularly went up that way. When we were going through our extensive house hunting phase more than a handful of estate agents (independent of location) told us the area is full of death adders and lesbians. The snakes are in the dunes, (especially Tennyson) and the lesbian scene is very strong there. Nothing judgemental in this, but each time we went back it clouded our minds and we could see why the statement was said. That impacted on our investment as we didn’t want to focus in one market area.

All said, a nice choice though and cheaper than most coastal spots.

It has a nice oldy worldy feel to it and the High Street is like Port Adelaides run down one, but still functioning and not a ghost town :chuckle: Lots of older buildings making it feel like a 'proper' place rather than a fabricated legoland or 1960/70's shanty town :ph43r:

Seaside town with good access to the Industrial areas in the North and close enough to the booming Port Adelaide to hopefully make a gain in any investment in a few years time.
