Big newish suburb with some building still going on here and there. Plenty of choice of schools, both public and private. Close to several shopping centres, good library and community centre. Close to major bus routes, and set just in the foothills so some leafy estates. The further up the hill you go the more expensive houses get. It's within 5 minutes of the Southern Expressway so commuting to town in the mornings is no prob (would take 40 mins to the city I suppose), and it's about 10 to 15 mins from the nearest decent beach at Port Noarlunga, and also the same distance from the large shopping mall Colonnades. It's about 15 - 20 minutes from Marion Mall too. About 25 minutes drive from the winery area of McLaren Vale and the start of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Younger demographic here as most of the suburb has been built in the last 10 years or so, so lots of younger families. I built in Woodcroft when most of it was still farming land (16 years ago) and love it down this way, although I live in Morphett Vale now. Have a look at the Onkaparinga City Council site, it might give you more info. Can't find the link at the mo and gotta get off to work. I'd recommend the area.

We have good friends who live there. Sharon's given a very good description of it's strong points. I would agree with everything and just add that it seems to be a really nice area to live in. It would suit our needs well and we'll happily move there if it's the only place we can afford something suitable. Only you will know what your needs are though ;) :D

Hi,

The primary school is also very good. My two go there and I am a volunteer.
The school may be big (over 800) but it extremely well managed.

Hi Lindsey,

We have lived in Woodcroft for nearly 4 years and Quite frankly I have no wish to move anywhere else.

I agree with Wizzy with everything.

Baloo: I wonder if the fact your moving to WA is clouding your judgement on Woodcroft and not SA as a whole? What are your reasons for moving to WA after only a short stint in SA?

Thanks for all the info - thats really great! I have a five year old (six in Jan) and a 3 year old so really interested in the primary school info. Is Woodcroft Primary the only primary within the cachment - the reason I ask is that my 5 year son is rally painfully shy and I am just concerned that he will be lost in a school with that many pupils - or are they split somehow so that is not an issue?

Many thanks again

What a coincidence - we went to see that house yesterday - it's lovely and we're really interested in it.The only thing that we were concerned about was the local park facilities for the little uns - we're off tomorrow to have another look around the area. There were quite a few of us there, who were really interested.Small world eh!

HI Lindsey,

The school is split into 3 sections. The R-2s have all their class rooms in one court yard in, the middle of the school, and on a friday they do Big Creative Play. where they get to do all sorts of activities and they chose a different one each week.
The 3/4/5s have their classes outside of the R-2s , with the year 6/7s up in the houses at Treager court.

They all have seperate play areas and all of the little kids get buddied up with classes from the 4-7 range.

They are very hot on the school values Caring, cooperation, respect, Excellence and Resposibility.

IMO it is an excellent school and I have been very impressed with all they do with the children. my youngest started there in yr2.

Next door is woodcroft heights pre-school which also has an excellent reputation.

Other schools in the area are Reynella East primary or Braeview primary, both good as far as I am aware.

I used to live in Traegar Court!

My kids were two of the first 55 children there when the school opened - their pic was on the wall in the office. I watched that school grow from a building site (actually an empty field) to the size it is now. (I think I covered most of the school's library books when we were trying to get the library up and running). Unfortunately one of my kids had a bad time there for various reasons but it really sounds as though the staff have the school on track now. The only down side is the traffic around the school at pick up and drop off times is a bloody nightmare, especially for the people who live adjacent to it. I used to get trapped in my house for 40 minutes every afternoon, and couldn't get the car out the drive to go get my daughter from her school in Reynella.

Dionne

My judgement wasn't clouded. I didn't like Woodcroft full stop. I didn't like SA full stop. I dont want to beat about the bush by saying that "the place was ok but...... " because thats not how i feel about my time and experiene(however short) of Woodcroft or SA. Whatever opinions we have of the place are just that, our opinion. We decided to try another state before throwing in the towel and going home and hey presto, happy as pig in s**t hehe and we've een here 14 months now

Each to their own :)

Babs, when it comes to moving from a place you don't like, good on you as far as I'm concerned, I for one have no criticism of that. What would be useful is if you could clarify what it was about Woodcroft in particular that you didn't like above and beyond your general dislike of SA. "I didn't like Woodcroft full stop. I didn't like SA full stop." doesn't make it clear if your statement has anything to do with the suburb itself or your general view of SA.

As this thread is about Woodcroft, it might be misleading if your general dislike of SA was mistaken for a specific dislike of one particular suburb.

Bob

PS glad you're enjoying WA, I've always enjoyed the places I've visited in that vast state!

Ok here goes

I didnt like wwodcroft because to me if felt very old. Didn't matter which part, to me it always had a kind of uncaring attitude. I cant comment on schools as such as my lil'un was only 2 1/2 but i can comment on playgroup. We attended the one nextdoor to woodcroft primary and i hated it. Lucy loved it because she got to draw/paint and do things that all kids love to do but absolutely NOBODY EVER SPOKE TO ME..............................EVER. We attended this playgroup for 4 month solid (apart from school hols) and it never got any easier. I tried to make conversation every single week with other mums and dads and even the girls that ran the playgroup but i always got a one word answer in reply but i always tried thinking it would ge easier the longer we went but it never did. If Lucy hadnt have liked it so much then i would have knocked it on the head asap. My neighbours were absolute nutters, one was the village idiot and the other was the village psycho!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The rental we had was poor, infested with ants, dark and dingy but the only thing that was available when we arrived. The shops at woodcroft and Southgate were ok but again the people treated me like i was invisible??????????????????? The only positive thing to come out of my time in woodcroft was the 2 sets of friends that i made and still keep in touch with.
I didnt like SA because again it had a very old feeling. Everytime we had a drive around places everything always looked really depressing. Buildings looked old and about to fall down. The employment situation was poor. My OH did get a job but it was poor and the wages were a joke. Whilst we were there i applied for some 30 jobs and never ever heard back from a single one of them, not even a letter to say thanks anyway.

As vi have already said i wasn't comfortable there and would not have stayed there long term

Sheila= We are not back in the UK, we are still in WA and loving it :D

totally agree with you about woodcroft heights pre-school, my daughter attends woodcroft primary and loves it, had no problems and she's doing really well, but i took my 3 year old, jake to the pre-school on friday for the first time, i stayed with him for the hour and a half, as ive never left him before and he didnt want me to leave, (although i did try), but no-one spoke to me or to jake, no-one welcomed the children, even though it was the first time for some, by half way through even jake asked, 'can we go to the shops now', then before we left a woman, one of the staff i had never even seen before, just walked up and said to me, 'next week, just wait outside the door with the other parents and then go', and she walked off! i didnt get a chance to discuss anything about jakes first day, or a chance for him to meet and make 'friends' with the staff, or anything, there was no interaction at all with the kids, i came away really upset, but thought maybe it was just me, and at first i thought i'll try again this week, hoping that things may get better but, i'm definately not going to bother now.

wizzywozza - July 30, 2007 08:48 AM (GMT)
Just curious Babs as to why you found Woodcroft 'old'. I built a house in Woodcroft in 1991 and we were one of the first families to settle in the fairly new suburb - waaaaay before the shops were built on Panalatinga Road, or the Woolies complex in Pimpala Road, and even before Southgate at Reynella was rebuilt to the size it is now. I can understand you disliking the place, we all have places we can't stand, but I just wanted to know what made you say Woodcroft was old.

I am glad you are happily settled in WA. WA is a lovely place. Thanks for your honest opinion. As a resident of Woodcroft it was interesting hearing someone elses view of the area and how different peoples opinions/experiences can be of the same suburb.
