Description: Living Costs

I want to try and start estimating what it is going to cost-us to live once we arrive...
We are a family of Five and will need a 3/4 bed rental, with pool.
What is a rough rental cost ?
What would be the weekly shopping bill for a family of five ?
What are typical Gas/Electric/Phone/Broadband costs ?
Do you pay an equivilant to Poll-Tax/Rates..... if so, how much ?
What would you pay typically for Car Insurance ?
What other costs do I need to consider ?

This will depend on where you are....best to have a look at www.realestate.com.au and see how much rentals are...
What would be the weekly shopping bill for a family of five ?
I don't think anyone can answer that, as everyone's needs are different, but be prepared to be surprised...its not as cheap as you may think....(of course, there will be someone who will disagree... :loopy: )
What are typical Gas/Electric/Phone/Broadband costs ?
Think my last electricity bill was nearly $400 for the quarter...can't remember what gas was....broadband is $60 a month for us....AGAIN, this will again depend on what you family use is...
Do you pay an equivilant to Poll-Tax/Rates..... if so, how much ?
Yes, our rates are $230 a quarter
What would you pay typically for Car Insurance ?
Again...all depends on what car you have
What other costs do I need to consider ?
As i have said...its so difficult to judge as everyone is different.....but my one bit of advice is....any figures you are quoted...don't convert it back into pounds and think...wow that's cheap!.....its not once you are earning and paying out in dollars..

HI,
As lorraine says a lot depends on where you live and how you live!! we all have different needs. But the main thing is NOT to convert. try and base your budget on what you think or are actually earning.
GROCERY BILL- Dependant on the time of year I pay between $175 -$225 a week for the 4 of us.
GAS/ELECTRIC once again dependant on time of year. our bills have been typically summer gas $125 per qtr winter gas $250 per qtr Elec approx $350 a quarter, same for winter and summer due to tumble drier winter and air con summer.
WATER costs approx $1000 a year
COUNCIL TAX $1085 a year
EMERGENCY SERVICES LEVY $86 per year
CAR INSURANCE - we have a small car that comes in at $245 a year and a 4x4 that comes in at $525 a year
Dont forget REGO thats $520 a year for small car and $680 for big car.
PETROL: goes up and down evey day. suppose it depends on how far you have to travel
OTHER COSTS: Ambulance cover $107 a year or if you want private health cover $30+ a month dependant on cover.
KIDS school dentist $35 a year
SPORTS FEES for the children, I currently pay $120 a week, but it is obviously dependant on what they do(mine are out every night and weekends) dont forget the cost of uniforms and travel
PUBLIC SCHOOL FEES: Primary $200-$300 a year. High school $400- $600 a year plus the cost of extra curricular and school trips etc etc
Obviously the way you live is dependant on income, your needs and the way you spend the family budget. NO two families can be the same.
I have just given a spectrum of what we pay out.
Hope this helps

Sheesh!!....$2200!!!
Is that for acreage or a standard house block??
We pay $1300 for 2.5 acres - but we get the Primary Producer concession as we have an olive grove.
It's the first time the sum has gone up this year - the last few years it was going down!!!

No its a house block. Not really normal size as its 3500m but its nowhere near 2.5 acres. The robbing gits!
