Title: TV's and Electricals
niklee - October 25, 2007 04:01 PM (GMT)
Know it sounds daft and possibly oft asked but is it ok to bring electrical goods over from uk? radios, kettles , dvds, ps2s etc. and just buy oz plugs . or is the whole system different so rendering them useless.? : any help grateful

from what i can gather, yes they should all work. some people take those extention leads with multiple sockets on, means you only have to buy the one aussie plug to run a few things off.

Yes everything will work fine - if you have it and can fit it in your container then bring it :D
We bought quite a few electrical bits with us and Greg had a great afternoon putting all the new plugs on  ;)

Great news that we don't have to replace EVERYTHING, but isn't there a problem with the TV's. apparently, from what I understand, the only way a TV from the UK can work is through a digital receiver due to the differences in frequency. Can anyone confirm this and also what digital facilities are available.

Both our portables don't work at all - but an older tv can pick up 2 channels (albeit sbs and a foreign channel - which are crap!) Does anyone know a local business that convert them - we're in Woodcroft.

would be cheaper to buy digiboxes I suspect......
Strathfield or similar often have them around the $50 mark
EDIT
There you go.....$48
http://www.strathfield.com.au/images/Catal...015/JPG/p18.JPGthere's even one for $69, which will let you add your own hard drive, making it a recorder........

We brought out 3 tv's - 2 portables and one bigger one. The portables can receive pictures but no sound, but the big one for the front room works fine with no digi box or vcr and it still going strong after over 3 years. :) Like someone else has said if you've got the space then bring it. If it doesn't work what have you lost?

Some will be lucky if their TV's are multi-regional, or able to be re-set to multi-regional.
Otherwise the digibox seems to be the way to go.
But the good thing is there's a solution for every TV, no need to give them away before you come out :)

Away from Tv's, I've just learnt that my british DvD's due to arrive in November, won't play on a aussie DVD player - it needs to be a british one? ??

Just un-lock your dvd player, just google it & put in the make & serial number & Bob's your uncle. I'll see if I can find the unlocking codes sites for you :D

When I bought a dvd player at Myer I asked for instructions to make it multi-region. The salesman said it was already multi-region, as they had had to change it from the factory settings so that it would play Aussie dvds! Just avoid Sanyo and some Panasonic players, as they can be awkward to convert. The rest just need a code typed in via your remote.

Our TV works fine with nothing extra needed! The only wierd thing is if we record ABC it comes out in black and white! Odd that, Dr Who looks OK but the Bill is n so good!

Thanks for the link Shaz. We have just used it for our DVD Recorder and it is now Multi-Region!!!! Cool, we can play all the DVD's we've bought in the US.
For anyone who is going to try this, it was really easy and took about a minute to do it.

Just gone through the pocess of getting all electrical stuff up and running. I bought 20 x Oz to UK plug adaptors from ebay and packed them in hand luggage (mainly to get laptop, modem etc powered on arrival for communication purposes). This proved a wise move, though be careful because most adaptors don't have an earth connection so you should only use them on equipment with plastic cases (with no earth wire in cable) like tv's not washing machines etc.
Bought Oz plugs from Bunnings (B&Q) and fitted. A little more fiddly than UK plugs and a little scary that they are not fused.
Any UK tv, video, dvd recorder etc with a scart or the 3 AV connectors (L, R & V) can be connected to an Oz digibox. The Oz digibox's have the 3 AV connectors so you will need a scart to AV cable or adaptor. Ships all the leads you have !
Also ship all your multiway extension leads etc. We shipped a lot of stuff but still wish we had shipped more. A basic toolkit is a good thing to pack in hand luggage (multi head screwdriver, adjustable spanner etc)
Slightly off topic, if you need tools to dismantle furniture in the uK (beds etc), tape the tools to the furniture so you don't have to empty all your boxes looking for them (you won't believe how the packers jumble all your things into different boxes).
Again slightly off topic, unless you have expensive bikes or you are particularly attached to them, don't worry too much about leaving them behind. We sold ours in the UK and paid less for brand new ones in Oz.
Good luck

Some really great tips here Marthas OH !! :D
I really like the one about taping tools to furniture. I would never have thought about that.
Hope you don't mind, but I've copied your post into my tips folder!
