There are a few sea beasties to be aware of.... The biggest and by far scariest is the white pointer, aka great white shark. Like it or not, they do hang around South Australia, but it would be highly unlikely you would see one. They prefer the deeper waters, further out in the gulf, but they will come in when following the snapper shoals.
There have been few attacks but ....they are out there.
There are other sharks out there, but none have the infamy of the great white.
Check out the Rodney Fox museum at Glenelg....he was nearly munched in the 60's at Aldinga
Jellyfish - not a major issue
blue-ringed octopus...fairly common, fairly poisonous. They are quite small, and like to live in old beer cans. If they are flashing their blue rings at you (very pretty!), you need to stop bugging them.
Poisonous fish - there are a number of poisonous fish, the stonefish is probably the best known
sting rays - very common. They have a huge poison spike at the base of their tails that they are very adept at stabbing things with. If you are unlucky enough to tread on one of these, they will swing that tail up and stab you through (and I mean through!) the leg. I saw a guy who had been hit whilst I was crabbing at Port Gawler....went straight through thick rubber waders into his leg.....he was not a happy man!
That's about it I reckon......could be worse!
There are some very spectacular things in the sea...whales, seals, dolphins etc, but most of them are fairly "nice" and not wanting to do you any harm.
Having said all this, the chances of anything happening to you are remote. In summer, thousands go swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving etc and nothing happens to them. Enjoy the sea!
