Title: What do you drive?
Description: wimpy 4 cylinder or V8 monster.

Hi,
Me and the missus were discussing what type of car we would buy when we arrive(big mistake).
She would opt for a small hatch (Focus) sized car( wimpy 4 cyl). Couldn't drive anything bigger :D
Now I'd opt for something a bit more useful, say a dual cab ute, 2 cars in 1(car and pickup) ideal for moving stuff about.
I've always been a fan of American muscle cars and have seen their Oz equivalents, the wife knows this and reckons i'm going to blow most of our savings on a big V8 "hoon-mobile" or a big "Shogun"type thing for taking the kids to school in.
So those already in Oz, What did you buy?

We now drive a Citroen Zsara Picasso, after having Ford Escort for four years.
Took me a while to get used to a bigger car, but now don't think that I could ever go back.
We would really like to take our car with us, but think that it is going to work out too expensive in the long run for parts, servicing etc.
Not sure what we are going to end up with, but probably need two vehicles as Kevin is a Painter & Decorator.

I drive a big old petrol eating Ford Fairlane - being blonde here but I think it's a 6 cylinder  I know it has a 4 litre engine or something in the pointy end!

Well the missus drives a magna and I drive an old golf gti. Saying that I worked out my GTI had more grunt power/weight than the guys at work V8's :o . Besides I prefer 35mpg instead of 15 tbh.

We drove the golf to Robe and back no worries

Hello There
We have a Mitsubishi Pajero 1989 diesel (4x4) for me to drive kids round in and Daz has got a Holden gemini to get to work and back.
Must admit in my opinion there is no point getting here, finding the fuel much less expensive but then buying a car with an engine twice the size you need as it ends up costing you about the same as uk to fill up your tank.
We can fill our Mitsubishi tank for about $55 and Daz uses about $20 every ten days or so to get too and from work.

We've got a 4 litre Ford Falcon. Lovely car to drive, very efficient aircon, but in hindsight would have bought something that's easier on the petrol consumption. Still, at least we don't do too many k's. Got a really good deal on it at the time via a friend and can't afford to change

Evorobin posted a webpage on another thread that shows you the top 10 cars viewed on the Australian website. It might be of some use to you.

I have a holden, barina. My hubby advises me this is like a vauxhall corsa.

I don't really care what car I drive as long as it gets me there and has air-con, so I am easily pleased.

Hubby has a Toyota Supra Turbo, its an old red clapped out, heap of junk, but he has a softspot for it. So he's easily pleased too!!

If we required a 4x4 thingy or one of those house things on wheels, we'd hire one specifically for the trip.

We drive a Ford laser 4 cylynder 1.8 air con etc etc and a Hyundai Excel for me to work and back no air, only when the widows are down!! Both are autos.

Used to have a Ford Falcon 4 litre V6, air con, auto, cruise, etc etc , it never got into top gear, 6okmph limit then, now a 50kmph limit, so used heaps of juice. Also cost more for the rego, V8 cost more also utes rego cost more.

We have driven to Narrandera for a weekend return trip of 2200kms and Halls gap return trip of 1100kms in the 4 cylinder, no probs.

Sorry for being so blonde but this is where I get confused. The names of the cars you have all put down I can recognise i.e. Ford, Hyundai etc but it's when you get to the models. I know that they change the model names in various countries can you tell us what the models would compare to in the UK?

Thanks

Sasha :)

Hi there,

Well I picked up my brand new ford focus this week and LOVE it. But you have to realise that I have been living in America for years and have been driving SUV's ie jeep, landcruiser etc and longed to have a zippy car like they drive in the UK but wouldn't dare over there (They're just TOO small!!!!) SO I'm thrilled. I have to say that I've noticed that alot of the Brits here do tend to go for the bigger cars But I'm backing your wife on this one - I'll put her in touch with a great salesman!!!!

Yes we found the same problem with trying to recognise models of car, Sasha. Don't know what to suggest apart from finding a car salesmsite where they have pictures! Holden is the name for Vauxhall here. My much loved Nissan Almera is called a Pulsar here.

Hi Lorriane,

Nice to see you on the site

Are you coming to Podgypossum'd party, has Sarah invited you?

If not give her a kick up the bum and ask her why not.

See you soon,

Tracey

We also drive a 4 litre Ford Falcon, it's not too bad on long runs but does tend to guzzle the petrol on short trips. Petrol here goes up and down at the drop of a hat, last year it was 75 - $1 a litre but this year I haven't seen it under 80 odd cents. Petrol tends to go up on weekends so we try and fill up mid week to save a few dollars. Our car in the UK was a Honda Prelude and with the cost of petrol back there cost us a fortune to fill up so we are only too pleased to fill up here!

My hubby also has a motorbike so he uses that mainly for going to work and the odd ride out with mates. Rego here is a bit on the expensive side especially when you opt to pay for comprehensive insurance too. We have just paid for the car and bike in the last 2 weeks - bike $241.00 for 6 months and car $470 for 9 months. I think we paid around £80 for tax for the bike and £160 for car in the UK a few years back. Ok you get 3rd party insurance with the rego but if you want comprehensive insurance you have pay a different broker I personally think they should give you a preference 3rd party or fully comp that would surely cut down costs.
