Title: Dentists/braces

:D Hi all, this may have already been discussed but not since i've been a member, could I have info on dentists in Adelaide as I have a 13 yr old who needs train tracks fitted, our dentist wont do it here as he says it is very different there and they would not be able to adjust them?
Is he just fobbing me off, to save money or is he right, do I need to start saving now?
laura :what?:

Hi
We haven't had to deal with braces here but in general:

Primary kids can be covered under the school dental service for free. Appointments seem to be sorted via the school and the kids taken to the clinic for them with parent invited to attend too, though we haven't had an appt yet so still to confirm.

Secondary kids can be registered with the schools dental service for $35 each (discounts if more than one) which covers one year's "examinations, cleanings, fillings, x-rays, mouthguards, extractions and emergency care" but "specialist care is not provided" - I guess this is where braces fall... Our Vicky has her first appt tomorrow, she had teeth extracted before we left uk and they hoped she wouldn't then need braces, but need to get this checked out now it's all settled in 6 months on.

Well I hope you have insurance or heaps of cash because the public dental service here is shocking. It takes two years just to get a check up (emergency dental is quite good though) and you will pay $200 to go private plus heaps more if anything needs doing. I was quoted $3000 to have a tooth rebuilt privately!

Your dentist sounds dodgy tbh...

I hear that some are going to the Philipines as its much cheaper(including flights), and the quality of work is very good.

I did overhear some one saying that braces cost over $1,500 here and when you see how many kids wear them it's very alarming "are they really needing them or just lining the dentists pockets" ???

We took out extra medical cover for dental and optical cover as we all wear specs, but I think your only allowed up to $800 dental work a year.

Better start saving like Andy said and get all work needed out there. Also get kids eyes checked, our daughter as only recently started wearing them and cost us $260 "she's almost 5 yr old" Get it done on the good old NHS I say whilst you still can....

:106.gif oh dear, just what I expected, seems that the kids will be ok while at school, but not so good for us!
our dentist wont do my sons braces as I was honest about emigrating, I was worried that if I did not say anything I would end up having to come back to England to have braces altered or removed as they dont seem to have the same tools, maybe i'll have to start saving then!
Thanks all for your advice XXXXXXX laura :eyes mouth:

Hi Laura

when are you planning to move?

I told my sons orthodontist last year and he said he'd try to get as much done as possible before we leave!

As we didn't manage to sell the house last year, we're now at the final stages of the brace adjustments and hope to have completed the treatment by July!!?

Our daughter had her brace fitted about 12 months ago, cost us $3600, but with our rebate from extras cover it cost us $1800. She's still 6 months to go but does she look better for it, you bet, well worth it.

Hi Jules,
we are hoping to be on our way by september, so I dont think that will be enough time for him to have them fitted and removed again(dont know much about these things) may have to wait,

and steve and lyndsie, thanks for that info, may have to get a bank loan, but what the hell, I will have a handsome son at the end of it all,
It's certainly an eye opener on this site, I think I know more about Adelaide than Hampshire now!!!!!!!!!!!!! :bouncy:
