Title: Tasmania, Christmas 2004

Elaine - January 15, 2005 04:29 AM (GMT)
Well, I've finally got there. It's taken me forever to sort through all the photos and write up some text, but here's our Tassie adventure ready for the viewing....

Or if you want the rest of our site, it's at http://www.ozipom.com

And yes, the rumours are true. We very nearly didn't come back we loved Tassie so much. It is definitely now our first choice for a place to settle in Oz, should we decide to do so - gainful employment permitting, of course, which could be the difficult part...

I told you didn't I Elaine?!!! It was also a decision we nearly made to move to Tassie. Its beautiful over there. Apparently jobs are hard to find over there, we were tempted to buy out a restaurant in Port Arthur which was up for sale called The Oyster Boys, is it still there? Lovely food.

I noticed from your tales that you didn't do Port Arthur and Strahan. You would have loved it at those places. With Port Arthur having so much history to it with the convicts and seeing the ruins of the buildings - and with Strahan that place reminded me of Port Miriam in Wales - beautiful!

Michelle, we simply ran out of time :(
Tassie is about half the area of the UK and you just can't 'do' it all in a fortnight unless you drive through everywhere snapping away on the camera and only find out what it was really like when you look at the photos later.

We wanted to chill out, slow down, go on lots of walks and made the decision to see a lot less, but take it at our own pace and see it properly. We did more or less a loop up and around the middle of the island and didn't see either the east or west coast, sadly.

Ah well, there's always next time :P

We only did 10 days in Tassie but I agree it was a little rushed and I wished I could have spent more time in Stanley which is the north west of the island. I have family history there and met a distant cousin of mine who runs a guest house. My ancestor built Highfield House at Stanley and his name is mentioned a few times in the books. My cousin said next time we go over we MUST stay at her place. We didn't go to the east at all so that will be another trip.

Living for years in Tasmania, it's true what you say about the hardship in finding work, although I believe the economy is picking up.

Ginnie and I went to Tasmania for a two year "adventure" to get away from all the "bad" influences to our marriage . . . me surfing every weekend with my mates!

It was the only place in Australia where we didn't know anyone and I couldn't go surfing with them!

I got a job transfer with my work for the Commonwealth gov't and what was supposed to be two years ended up being thirteen years. Both of us came back + three others!

. . . . . must be the Tasmanian air? ?
