Title: Working attitudes

Pommygirl - April 2, 2004 11:29 AM (GMT)
Just wondered whether any one else has experienced the difference in attitudes with office workers in the CBD. I've been temping for 18 months now in various companies and have come across a somewhat "stuck up" attitude in almost everywhere I've been. People are not very professional. In one of the jobs, I was threatened that I would get hurt if I didn't give him his ball back - I'm being serious here and it was in an office!! :68: Also temping at Christmas time was really depressing because I was left out of everything. I'm beginning to think its because I'm English but you only need to look at them and you can see how miserable they all look. I'm glad I've been temping though, it has really given me an insight into what I want to do when I get PR. Has anyone else experienced being treated badly at work?

Here's a tip - you shouldn't grab mens personal parts as they will get upset unless it is just for caressing or kissing or :sign53:!

Seriously though is it just that they want to be out enjoying themselves rather than be in work?

Well my experience has been completely the opposite. Whether it's because I'm male or that I've been working in Government departments I don't know.

I have been working as a contractor for 4 months now in the CBD and have found just about everybody I've worked with as friendly and helpful as could be. When we found out that our furniture had been delayed and that we would be in a house without furniture for a month my boss lent me everything we needed. This included fridge/freezer, beds, hi fi and tv.

At Christmas I was invited to the xmas knees up. A xmas picnic in the rain was a first for me. I'm not sure whether I would have prefered that or being in a warm pub!

I thought I would find resentment in the workplace what with me being a pom, but I feel accepted everywhere.

I hope you have better luck with other jobs.

Working in London, I don't believe I could find anyone as unprofessional and stuck up as who I used to work with. My boss once told me I'd just have to 'bend take it up the ar$e' when I asked for more staff - and he was being totally serious and thought he was cool by saying it! What he didn't expect is the verbal abuse he got back from me :sign53: :sign53: :sign53: .....and most of our staff used to get really annoyed when they had to actually do some work as it stopped them booking a holiday/planning their wedding/shopping etc on the internet. And all this in the fast paced world of investmenet banking!!! The Aussie's I have worked with have all had a really good professional behaviour though - might have been because they were temping so they had to work hard???

Dunno about attitudes from co-workers.........no that's a lie......the last two jobs I have had I met the bitchiest women on the earth who were only to happy to try and trip me up and get me into trouble, almost to the point where I felt like snotting one or two of them.

But from seeing what goes on at my ex's workplace and other's, it's the attitude of Australian management that really p*sses me off. They treat the ordinary hard working person (Aussie or not) as scum. The bottom line is that workers are dispensible and can easily be replaced, usually by agency staff.

Whether this is a result of the 'part time/casual' work culture here or not I don't know.

Permanent staff often get their noses put out of joint by having agency staff working alongside them simply because agency staff earn so much more money doing the same job.

It was so bad where my ex works that he became a union shop steward and is slowly getting things changed for the better, but we still joke that when you become a manager or supervisor then you have to attend ar*ehole school first.

I think that is true where ever you work though nowadays. The best job I had was working with a load of men and being the only woman - at this point I have to add not that anyone of them were goregous hunks just that they treated me like a lady and were total gentlemen.....I was known for giving as good as I get mind you so if they did start to cross the line they did get put back in place very quickly

The managers though are under so much pressure nowadays as no-ones job is safe so they do become arseholes without really thinking about it....unless there is a secret training camp somewhere?? :ph43r:

The secret training camp is in Adelaide!

I do a little job where it's all guys and just me. I love it - there's no bullshit, they treat me well and we have a good laugh - and there's no politcal correctness at all which suits me just fine.

First thing they asked me last Monday morning was 'did you get laid at the weekend?' Won't tell you my answer :bouncing smiles:

I would just like to raise this issue again - to let you know how my day went:

Today, I had a days work today in a doctors surgery. I am a PA/Secretary and having not had any experience working in a doctors surgery, I thought it would be a challenge. The job was receptionist but I also had to assist patients, conduct tests including taking wee wee samples. Mmmm not sure where to lay the line but it went off to a really really bad start. My first call accused me of having a real attitude problem because I couldn't assist him with his enquiry. After he threatened to come over and knock my block off, I abruptly ended the call remaining polite and telling him that I did not tolerate his behaviour and would be terminating the call. Witnessed by the doctors daughter, she praised me of how I dealt with the caller as she would have told him to f*&% off. At the same time, my agency was on the other line to talk to me, so I did tell them as I was extremely shaken by this caller. Not that they cared, they didn't even call again to see how the rest of the day went. This irate caller called again but luckily I did not take the call, he spoke to the doctor obviously complaining about my bad attitude.

So today, I have a bad attitude and have been taking wee wee samples.

Interesting .... maybe if I really develop an attitude problem I might actually get somewhere in this small City. I hate being a Receptionist.

That is so sad but I have to add very funny!

Haven't you read the other posts yet about doctors receptionists? You have to get attitude..that is in their job descriptions, they go to the same place where the bosses go for secret training just to become totally bitches!

Was it you who took PP wees sample and dipped it into Bills wee so she would pass?

I'm sure you will find a job that is nice soon and you will then find out what job you want to do full time. I am still laughing at the thought of taking wee samples and having bad attitude...I think I would have serious bad attitude sorting through everyone elses wee!

I do hope it gets better for you soon.

Sasha :)
