As those who know me knoe, I will be jetting out to Adelaide just as soon as I complete my MA. My mother is in a furious quest to change my mind and her most recent contribution is the following article:
** Australia ponders a salty future **
Rising salt levels threaten water supplies in one of Australia's biggest cities, and damage farmland and rivers.

The article basically talks about ancient salt deposits rising to the surface land making Adelaide salt bound by 2050.
Can any current residents elaborate on this? Not t :mr man: hat it changes my mind any, but just for the record.
many thanks
Claire

Don't know all the facts but in a nutshell - yes - in about 15 - 20 years we will be short of fresh drinking water. A lot of Adelaide's water comes from the River Murray and the levels are falling for various reasons and the salt levels are rising which also affects the farm land and the open countryside around the river. Currently we have certain water restrictions here - mostly regarding watering of gardens, in an effort not to extract so much from the Murray.
Sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense - been doing my bit to save water tonight and stuck to Scotch

Oh and re the locusts.......my mum (who is in West Sussex) asked me about that a couple of weeks ago - she said it was all over the news over there. Well I haven't heard anything about a plague of locusts.......although I believe there is a bit of a problem somewhere in NSW.
It is not a plague of biblical proportions - in fact - it's not a plague at all. I haven't seen a locust for years.

I think the locust thing was in Brisbane!

Thanks for all your information re the salination projects. I await the next obstacle thrown at me by my family (prior to this one they tried to convince me that i would get charged 40% tax by the British governement when i sell up, and 40% on top of that by the Australian government when i got there!!!)
See you all as soon as we can
