Title: Wildlife - flys!
Description: and other pests

mayten - April 18, 2004 11:22 AM (GMT)
 can any of you lovely people already in adelaide tell me if there is a problem with flies or other flying insects, if so is it just a seasonal problem or year round ?
we just want to know the extent of them so we are prepared when we get there, thanks in advance adelaidians. :thumbs up:

pickledpossum - April 18, 2004 11:29 AM (GMT)
I really havent found them much of a problem at all. A couple of times in the heat of summer they were a nuiscance at a restaurant we go to, but certainly not at home or in the garden. We do get them just like anywhere else but not overly so, but thats just our experience, maybe some places do have a problem

Hi Mayten
I feel there are two answers really here - flies in the house are almost nonexistent as all doors and windows have flyscreens on them. So less problem than in England really.

Outside - well I've been here for a summer but not yet a winter. Flies themselves I haven't found a problem at all. Mozzies are more of a bugbear though and I've been bitten endless times, even just putting the washing out <_< Just keep using the repellant roll-on and anti-itch cream, we're becoming major consumers of both

Seriously though, it's a bit of an annoyance rather than a major drawback.

Creepy crawlies such as ants and cockroaches are ever present, but we found a quick spray all round the skirting boards has kept them out for months now - the spray can promised 'up to 6 months' and so far it's as good as it's word.

that's a lot to live up to!!

reminds me of the old joke..........

a guy and his girlfriend are finally getting round to doing the "wild thing"!
She is laid in bed waiting, he strips off and stands there, hands on hips, proud of himself.
She looks down below and says "and who do you think you are going to satisfy with THAT!"

Eagerly he gallops towards the bed.......

....."ME!", he says.

Sorry.......

I shall expect to be moderated

:sigh:

Hi Mayten

We were out in oz over xmas and visited brisbane adelaide and perth the fly problem was only obvious in Perth to us. We had a few persistant ones in Glenelg one day but nothing to worry about.

Just to quickly say I read an artical in the paper the other day that there has been some research done that if you eat marmite you dont get bitten by mozzies

apparently you let off a smell undetected by humans thank god but mozzies hate it so there you go,

Cheers Donna :)

So does it work with Vegemite too :o or do we all get you to pack your bags with Marmite for us on your way out here? :bouncing smiles:

Sounds like a cue for some family research here - though come to think of it my son's the only one who won't eat vegemite and he probably gets bitten the least out of all of us :what?:

the flys are worse when you get out of the city into the countryside...that's when you need the hat with the cork's on :medium smiley2:

you'll soon get used to the Australina wave ;)

but the worse flies are the one's you don't see....you just see the bite that they've left :(

Well I have to disagree, I have had bad experiences with flys, especially along the beach.

They are very persistant, wanting to crawl into my mouth, I have had a few even trying to get into my eyes!!!

The problem has seemed to calm down, I suspect it is because of the cooler weather.

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly
Perhaps she'll die .....

tracey&wayne - April 19, 2004 12:38 PM (GMT)
It is so not funny!!!

I inhaled one the other week, I really did think I was going to die, I was coughing my guts up!!! :crying:

only ever notice flys in mt barker when in cafes.
experienced flys on the beach (Glenelg, vic harbour, and lake alexandrina).
thats it for me.
lots of flys in the outback.

my wife eats/ate marmite lots, and is frequently munched by mozzies.
I hate marmite and mozzies rarely bite me.

blackcountrygirl - April 20, 2004 10:24 AM (GMT)

These Aussie flys like to go for the eyes and are very persistent.

I was working out in the garage the other night after dark for about an 1 hour with the light on and with the garage door wide open and did not see a single fly, moth, insect or spider. :bouncing smiles:

becca6e - April 21, 2004 07:48 AM (GMT)
Apparently the Aussie flies like to drink the water from your eyes???!!!

Garf ;)

pickledpossum - April 21, 2004 07:57 AM (GMT)
Well..in my considered opinion..you all need to bath more often!!

no slapping..i'm already under the desk :ph43r:

grayling - April 21, 2004 08:41 AM (GMT)
Until you have experienced the flies there is just no way you would believe how awful they can be.
I once walked round Cressbrook reservoir in Queensland and the flies made the whole walk a misery.
Believe me they are NOT funny after a while.
There ise no point in pretending they don't exist. They don't go for food like flies in UK they go for YOU
