Title: Wildlife - Snakes

There's been loads of references made to the presence of spiders, flies etc., but what about snakes? Are they a common problem out there or are they few and far between? And what about the poisonous types?

There are Brown snakes all over oz except for Tasmania. You get different kinds of brown snakes but they have the 2nd most poisionous venom in Oz. Copperheads and Death Adders are also around Adelaide area but from my book it says that they all try to get away from you and are not agressive wanted to bite you only using that as a last defence.
Andy is the man to answer you in more detail though, as this is all I could find in my book.
Sasha :)

Hi,
Alison has a phobia about snakes. Mostly of the trouser variety , more of a pest than a problem.:bouncing smiles:

Yes there are snakes about even in the suburbs but you just have to be sensible about walking in long grass and poking in holes like wood piles. In 13 years here I have only seen one live one - a huge red bellied black - I never knew I could run so fast (which is the wrong thing to do). My friends who emigrated a couple of years ago had a baby brown in their bathroom one day a few months after they arrived - but then they live on a 12 acre property up in the hills so they are bound to have a few. I also remember a couple of years a go a brown snake trying to get in a classroom block at Reynella East School - but the school has a creek running next to the oval and they are always getting snakes on the oval too. You just have to learn what to do if bitten, educate the kids, and use common sense about walking in areas where snakes could be lurking.

Hi Kazza
Similar to what Sasha said, try this
http://members.iinet.net.au/~bush/myth.htmlHardly anyone i've spoken to has even seen a snake here, and no one is concerned about then, although as Wizzywozza said be aware they exist.

We recently went to Tasmania and we saw 2 snakes - one dead one in the road and one live one up in Cradle Mountain. Never seen one in Adelaide though and my hubby's been here for 8 years and the one in Tassie was his first! I suppose it depends on where you live in Adelaide. Not likely to see one if you live in the City but if you live in the hills/outback then you will see them.

We have lived on our2,1/2 acre property, at Angle vale for 12years and never had a snake, and in 41 years in oz, i,ve probably seen 5, in the wild. Most people here are bitten trying to kill them, so get on with your life and let them get on with theirs <_< besides they do far more good in vermin arradication than harm.......mm

Hi Kazza
When me and the misses lived out in a small town called Lucindale (3.5hours from Adelaide) we lived on a 4acre farm property. I saw 2 snakes in the garden pretty close up and ran over a few more whilst driving about.
Don't let snakes worry you, i remember the first few weeks there, we was terrified to go into the garden but you soon get used to it.

Mr Mover - just wondered where Angle Vale is. Have been day-dreaming away, looking at properties in SA and came across one in Angle Vale that was my DREAM house. Boy it was fab.

Snakes, spiders, ( drop-bears? ;) )
Rules of Engagement when faced with unknown (or known for that matter) animals:
If it has more than 4 legs, kill it.
If it has less than 2 legs, kill it.
Out of interest I've got a 3 legged cat. He's lucky - he can go either way and remain safe.

There was an article on the Channel 10 news last night about snakes. It's still so unseasonably warm that they are still out and slithering about in the suburbs, and not going into hibernation. They showed the snakecatcher in a house in Magill retrieving a 2 metre brown snake from INSIDE the house. EEUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH........anyway the bottom line is that a parks and wildlife officer was saying it's not cold enough yet to just slip your foot into your wellies - check for snakes first! Oh yeah and the snakecatcher said he is still catching about 10 a day in peoples houses and back yards.
