Toshiba to give up on HD DVD, end format war: source 1 hour, 33 minutes ago Toshiba Corp is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high-definition video, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp, a company source said on Saturday.
Japanese public broadcaster NHK had earlier reported that Toshiba would suffer losses in the tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) as it scrapped production of HD DVD players and recorders and took other steps to exit the business.
The company source told Reuters that Toshiba was in the final stages of planning to exit the HD DVD business and that an official decision would be made soon.

Heh, can't say I didn't see that coming. LOL
i figured they would quit...wusses
lol
Would you keep fighting a fight that no one is supporting?
All the major film companies back Sony, because Sony was smart enough to make the Blu-ray player twice as much as their system so that people would buy a PS3 as their player. More bang for the buck.
Maybe the HD-DVD would have got more support if M$ would have included the player in the 360 to show others their dedication to the format.
The first sign of this backfiring on Toshiba was when M$ said that they would incorporate blu-ray in the future.
Good idea, failed execution. If I was Toshiba, I would blame M$ for their lack of support.
At least now we can get on with the next disc to replace dvds, because there was no way we were going to have both formats. Plus, who wants to say HD-DVD all the time when Blu-Ray rolls off the tongue. :P
