Title: A little curious
Cornfed - January 6, 2005 07:36 PM (GMT)
What type of gamers do we have on here? What kind of games do you guys like? Shooters? RTS? MMOG? RPG? I'm curious.
I'm a full spectrum gamer, myself. I like 'em all. First person, third person, hack-n-slash, you name it. I play all kinds, with the exception of one. I refuse to play crappy games. They aren't so much fun.

I'm more into rpgs of all different varieties (cept for major 3d like kingdomhearts or newer games by squaresoft.. cause, well, they make me ill). I'd be more into first shooters and such like DOOM and GrandTheftAuto's. But like the said excluded rpgs, they make me motionsick.
However, brain teasers like IntelliganceCube, Tetris, etc.. and Breeder games like MonsterRancher.. I take interest into as well. I also love oldschool games. Like AlexKidintheMiracleWorld, Mahjongg/Shanghai, PenguinLand, SimCity (the first), Populace, and warlords.
INFACT, if you step away from computer/videogame counsil games. I like playing boardgames and card games. Fact, I use to playtest boardgames (like AirBarons). And by cardgames I mean a whole variety. Magic to Mau to Poker.
Then there's P&P rpgs which I find cool. I like making them more than buying 30 dollar books and playing already made games.
So.... There ya go.
Oh yeah, almost forgot to add what I hate. I hate games where you can't figure out the controls and when you do it's really hard to play. I consider those sucky games. Wether the controls are really complicated (TomeRaider?) or are meant to be different because the game-makers wanted it that way. It blows eitherway on a grander scale.
Also hate MMORPGS (that you have to pay for).. Not only do they eat my friends, but they rip my friends off.

MMOs don't rip people off. At least, not if you're into gaming a lot. For me, it's either $50+ bucks a month buying new games and beating them, then going out and getting new ones, or $10-$15 bucks a month playing a MMO and then every once in a while getting a new game to play in between MMO sessions. They're not a waste of money as long as you are a die hard gamer.

Feh, you don't factor in blockbuster and/or renting games off that one internet rental site (that mails you stuff without a duedate).
I have more of a peeve with MMORPGS devouring my comrades than I do with pay, anyway. I just don't like the idea of them wasting their cash on stuff that takes them away from their friends. (haha, lots to controverse over that, eh? XP)
What's wrong with buying cheapo or used videogames? Not only can I play them through, but a few have alternative endings (like StarOcean2) AND I can go back to those games and play them again in the future as well.

I play a rather wide variety of games. RPGs, FPS, RTS, racing, action/adventure, fighting, puzzle, shmups, etc.
What I don't generally like to play is sports games. Blech..Just..blech. They do nothing for me. I also loathe MMORPGs, I just don't see the point. It can be super time (and money) consuming.. Just look at some of the people on Evercrack...er..quest. And the big thing now with people where I go seems to be FFXI. I also don't like having to pay extra fees to play a online game, besides what I already pay for net connection plus the game's price. Multiply the cost of playing any online games with a fee, several times over. Depending on how many and often you play..I could see it being very expensive. There's also the fact that there's no global ultra high speed net connection, that is across the board reliable and fast. In something like an online FPS, you get lag, it can cost you the game/win. Untill such a global network connection is available to everyone at low price, I'm sure there will still be people like me who generally shun that type of gaming. I'd rather have a few mates over for any gaming myself, or barring that, just enjoying whatever on my own.
Also still bust out the chess set every now and again when I have someone to play with. Don't play many card games, save for the odd game of (computer) Solitaire.

I like RPGs... I love most of the Final Fantasys. Kingdom Hearts was fun too... except I think mine has a bug, because I'm supposed to meet up with someone, and they're not fricken there! (Hallow Bastion, when you return) The Final fantasy XI MMO is okay... I don't deal well with large groups of unknown strangers trying to figure out what to do... we made a small static party of rl friends, and that was fun, until time differences came up and stuff.. almost no one goes on anymore. Oh well.
I like certain simulation games.. Sim City gets boring quickly... there's only so many times you can utterly destroy the city... I have RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, which takes me a while to beat their standards, which I think suck sometimes... but oh well. I have RCT 3 also, but I haven't played that one too much. The Sims, was very fun, and I'm enjoying Sims 2 a lot too. Although, I can't wait for the expansion pack... slim pickings object wise so far.
Adventure puzzles are fun. I played Siberia and had fun, and I'm working on Siberia II now. Although my favorite is an older game.. Journeyman 3. That was a fun puzzle/adventure game! Then again, how can you not enjoy a game that has a wisecracking A.I. as your helper? Of course, if you don't want the AI to give you historical tidbits, and silly jokes, you can set him to be quiet. I prefer chatty. He's funny ^_^ I never got into any of the Mist games though.
Arcade games are always fun and simple. Card games are okay. I miss playing Grave Robbers From Outer Space though... no one to play wth.
Paper pencil rpgs are fun, as long as your group is fun. That just kind of depends on different situations though. But I do miss playing.
Okay, I'm gonna shut up now.

I myself prefer to play games that do not suck. Thats my favorite genre of game, non-sucky types. Usually with me, I'll play whatever comes along and I like. If its a good game, no matter what genre it is, I'll probably buy it if I like it. Recently I've been playing alot of First Person Shooters, Half Life 2 and Counter Strike Source. Both are awesome games, I suggest them to anyone who is interested in the genre. Occasionaly, if I can find the time to relax a bit, I'll pop in a good RPG. I haven't had time to play a RPG in awhile though. I have my eyes set on Star Ocean and Disgaea, though I've still yet to play them. If I feel like really thinking, I'll play a Real Time Strategey.
My favorite RPG of all time, for reference, is Earthbound. My favorite First Person Shooter is probably Half Life 2. As for Real Time Strategey, nothing beats Rise Of Nations. I guess those are my three favorite genres, FPS, RPG, and RTS. I like games that I can just get into, and cause a reaction. I haven't touched many console games in awhile, but when I do play on my beloved PS2, I'm usually hacking things in Shinobi, or blasting things in Armored Core, or just having a mad drug-like trip in Katamari Damacy. As far as online games go, my life revolves around the FPS and RTS. Battlefield 1942, Counter Strike Source, Rise Of Nations, all great online games.
I hate MMORPGs. I tried them. Seriously. Most everyone I know loves this genre. All my friends play or played Everquest, Final Fantasy 11, and now World Of Warcraft. I try to play these games because I am a pathetic shell of a human who constantly needs to get involved in activities with those people, but I usually end up throwing the game out of the window within the week I purchase them.
Honestly. 15 dollars a month so you can spend 8 hours a day in front of the computer slaughtering 500 million wolfs to get some experience so you can get to the next level and get +2 strength to get the +5 sword so you can spend another 8 hours slaughtering 500 million ogres so you can get the +6 sword for on and on and on. And quests, dont get me started on quests. I hate those, so mediocre, so pointless. I really do hate MMORPGs. They don't have a point, no end, and dont even require any skill - just alot of time investment.
While I'm on that note, why are they called Role Playing Games? There is NO role playing in a MMORPG. Its one big grind, with nothing but a slew of leet dewds ownzing it up with their uber leet gear. They should just call them MMOG. No need to have that Role Play in the title - there isnt any. Unless you count "Healer, Tank, Damage" as a role.....in which case, its all just mashing the right key at the right time anyway.
Of course, this is all just my opinion. I'd also like to say that I beta tested World Of Warcraft for a very long time. I hated it. I warned everyone not to buy the game. They did anyway. They're enjoying a Everquest clone with many bugs and incomplete content, topped off with server waiting ques and a lag-broken mail and auction house. What riviting fun.
Thats all I'll type, for now.

Yeah. Definately check out Guild Wars. It's as close to counterstrike as an MMO can get. And made by the people that did Battle.net. And the classes were balanced by the guy that balanced the StarCraft races.
Also, I totally agree with you about the MMORPG thing. I just call them MMOs or mogs when I'm speaking. Partly because I'm opposed their name and partly because I'm lazy.
And to comment on Star Ocean and Disgaea. I hate them both. Star Ocean because it's incredibly lame. Right around the disl switch, it gets really lame. The way the plot twist will seriously piss you off.
As for Disgaea, I really loved it when I was playing it, but then my friend got a hold of it and did eveything in the game. EVERYTHING. over 160 hours. Then he decided that I needed to hear about it. So he just kinda spoiled the game for me. Otherwise, it's a really good game if you're into tactics games. Personally I like FF Tactics and FF Tactics Advanced better. Mostly it's the leveling in the game. It's required, and it's a grind. Plot is good, though, and the characters are cute and hilarious.
